I had the opportunity today to help.
My buddy Corey had decided to give, rather than sell to someone that had money, a camper to a local guy (Dave) that got burned out of his home a couple of years ago and had to move in to a camper on the property. I offered to Corey to haul it. When I say that the old camper was junk...you really can't comprehend.
So after screwing around for a couple of hours, and denting the tailgate on the pickup, trying to get the right size ball on the old GMC we struck off to haul this camper. I figure the truck and camper were close to 60 feet long.
It wasn't too bad pulling it from where it was.
The steep downhill on the road out with no trailer brake and the wheels on the pickup locked tight was...
interesting.
It only took a few shots backing up into the property with Dave and Corey directing traffic...
then it was just a matter of backing down the winding road to the spot Dave had chosen for his new digs.
When all was said and done Dave handed me a stick...a really beautiful walking stick he had made. Dave is disabled and really has nothing...and as he handed me this stick he said...
I don't have any money to pay you for hauling the camper...but please take this.
I told Dave...
I don't want your money...thanks for the stick.
The feeling left years ago...
but I feel good tonight.

You're such an old crank
Good on you! Helping others is the best reward.
[clap] [beer] Sorry, no vodka icon.
:)
Dented tailgate?
No good deed goes unpunished. [laugh]
I will try to emulate you and do something good for someone today. [clap]

If I told you how it happened you'd laugh even harder...
hey ya'all...
watch this. [laugh]
maybe one day when you are almost as old as methuselah, that walkin stick will come in handy and you'll have that feeling forvever!

The thread title had me a little worried. Like I was getting hauled out onto the carpet for something. ;D
If I didn't need to generate income for paltry things like... bills, I would spend ALL my time doing stuff like that. Can't put a price on how doing good for others makes you feel, well... good. Lisa was @JCPenny last week and found some decent Converse sneakers that were either mis-priced or on clearance for 25cents/pair. She bought every pair they had and we donated them all. One pair went to a friend of ours who has Leukemia and the rest to strangers. Not as cool as your story Nate, but in the same spirit. Thanks for sharing, it's a nice way to start my day. [thumbsup]

Good god the cranky old guy has a stick.....get off my lawn just became assault and battery.
;)
Well...a big thumbs up and a [beer] to you and Lisa too!
Nice DP. The stick is priceless.
And as BP pointed out, will help persuade hooligans to stay off your lawn.
Might make a useful prop next dimby, too

Don't get too close. :P
I can't see over the top of it.
More a staff than a stick...
I can wreak some havoc with this thing. ;D

literally?
My Dad always said " really .... You think you have it bad. You have your health and a family who loves you."
I miss him every day.
There are so many that need just a little help to put a smile on their face. An act of kindness is worth more than a pocketful money.
I always knew Nate was a good guy through that hard wrinkled dried out exterior :-)
I like this story.
I ran into some people that were living in a trailer on state forest land near an egg taking station. They had no place to go and were going to be towed away soon. I went out there and towed the to a new place and also gave them an old F150 to tow the trailer around with.
The downside to this story is that they saw me as a sucker and kept trying to hit me up for handouts. About 2 months later they managed to get the pickup towed away or stolen or something. All the same it feels good to give and I would like to do more of it if life didn't require hustling to survive.
