It would be cool, but I just can't consider moto cops, real cops. Anybody who has to make you sit on a curb until a real LEO can show up and haul you in is nothing more the a revenue generator.

Didn't a city in Canada do that last year?
One of the police departments that covers Deal's Gap has BMW police bikes. They can move on pretty good too ~

Same as these guys... I'm not sure how many high speed chases italy has to warrant these vehicles...

"Would you like to make the streets safer? Collect excess cash from the distracted citizenry? Support small local businesses? Then we're looking for you. [roll] [laugh] Yeah riding cupcake behind a LEO.... Village People much? [cheeky] Seriously though I'm of the opinion an officer who is going to pull people over in traffic stops and check background info should be equipped to make arrest and transport if needed. Absent that ability they are collecting revenue in the form of fines. They shouldn't be considered LEO but tax accessors. >:( And if you're going to try to tell me that their mere presence is a deterent, then I'd argue if they are trying to deter speeding and other traffic laws they should park in plainly visible places instead of hiding behind trees.

Soooo they need a skateboard with a chain to hook to the bike. The worse your behavior the faster they go on the curves.
Or make you run next to it [evil]
Although I agree that if they are a deterrent they should never park anywhere except in plain sight, which they never do around here.

El Matador, I'm not sure it's the amount of high speed chases they have but the unlimited potential for them that warrants having rides like these. :o After all, think of where we're are talking about here, the backyard for "these vehicles". [evil] [evil]
Italians usually do just about everything with style.
The cops there are pretty cool anyway. On one of our trips there I got cops in almost every city we visited to let me take pictures of them on their bikes. They smiled like they were movie stars. ;D (most of them)
Besides wouldn't you rather have cops like these anyway? look at the people all around these guys. they probably have a lot higher respect from the average guy than do U.S. cops. When these guys show up people gather around, when our cops show up people start runnin', thus the name of the thread. [popcorn] Seems like a no brainer to me.

So you're against having cops on foot?
Just b/c an officer is in a vehicle doesn't mean their only role is to make traffic stops. If an officer on a bike can more effectively pursue suspects in some situations, they're justifiable imo. So then what're they supposed to do while not in pursuit? Park the bike and drive a car around?
The fact that bikes can't be used for transport doesn't mean they shouldn't be used.

I don't know how they are used in your area but around here they are more than a suppliment to the police force. They are used almost exclusively in speed traps. The purpose of the speed traps? Secondarily to slow people down. Primarly to "catch the bad guys(ie generate income to buy more bikes). If I had ever scene a moto cop doing more than running a speed trap, or writing tickets I might agree with you.
If all it takes is nice bike and some finishing school for US cops to be respected then I am all for it.
What is the crime rate in most heavily areas of Italy?

In Napoli, 99.9% No-one obeys a single stop sign, red light, cross walk, etc. The hotel we stayed at rented our rooms out during the day for 'male female festivities'. The police, at least south of Rome are non-existent, and probably pay-rolled by the mafia.

Guys I posted that pics to show off the Italian state police 848 ,not to start another lets piss and moan about cops thread.
I read that the Lambo is mainly used as a PR tool, to catch speeders on the Roma-Salerno Hwy and to deliver organs.

I like it. I don't remember seeing any polizia on those or in such fun cars when I was living there but go them. Think of being a police recruiter...."play your cards right and you could be riding around on one of these all day every day." Come on, wouldn't most of you guys be drooling for that job?

Wow, those front brakes are HUGE!! :o
You're assuming these pretty vehicles are standard issue.
Police around here drive beautiful vehicles generously donated by wrong-doers (confiscated). Couldn't that be the cars? As for the bikes, well, they're just darn beautiful - and I don't blame them for buying them. The bikes are not imports, therefore, cheaper for the police to buy than the publice.
Besides, who would slow down if they were being pulled over by a piaggio? [cheeky]
I think I read somewhere that this Gallardo was a gift from Lamborghini to the city.
Nice gift 8)

San Francisco has a lot of cops on bicycles and Suzuki DR400s. Lots more practical for getting around the city than cars. I haven't seen any of them pull someone over for a traffic violation though. I once got lost in a bad area on my moto and got an escort out of the neighborhood from 3 motor cops on the big cruisers.
