Title: Friends catch killer
Post by: Ducatamount on December 08, 2012, 04:16:55 AM
So, I'm down visiting my best friend (since 7th grade) in Tyngsborough Ma. and he told me this story.

We had some friends in high school (he still sees them once in a while), Kevin and Jeannie McDonough, who were high school sweet hearts that got married and had a son and daughter.

Flash forward to a hot summer night a couple of years ago in Chelmsford Ma.

They're sleeping and are awakened by a muffled cry from their teenage daughter, they both get up to go check on her.
Entering her room, they find a big guy dressed in dark clothes wielding a big knife standing over her.
Kevin, not a big guy but strong (on the wrestling team in high school) jumps on the guys back and throws a choke hold on him.
Jeannie tries to grab his hands and keep him from stabbing at her husband. In doing so she gets her hands cut up pretty good.
Kevin pretty much chokes him out and they both end up on the floor but he doesn't let go and Jeannie gets the knife away from him. Kevin keeps him in the sleeper hold until the cops get there (Jeannie called 911).

Turns out that this guy was a (serial killer) trucker that would park his truck and go looking for victims.
He was tied to at least one other murder and the FBI was investigating others.
In his truck they found other evidence linking him to other murders.
In his portable DVD player was a disc called "Hunting Humans".

I think their daughter deals with this pretty well but still has some anxiety (naturally!).
I'm very proud of them. I believe there would have been more killings if they hadn't caught him.

Wow... makes me glad I was a wrestler.  That's a crazy story... Did your friend tell you how the guy got in?  Man, that's crazy.

I heard the parents had gone to bed and the daughter came home (in the back door) and left it unlocked thinking her brother was coming home shortly but he decided to spend the night at his friend's house.

A very good example of a situation where the possession and use of a firearm would have made a big difference.  Wrestling a big guy with a knife and get cut up?  No thanks.  Pull trigger repeatedly and make holes in bad guy.

That was a close call! A parent's worst nightmare.
Your friends are heroes. Hope your mate's Missuss and kid are ok.
A gun would have made the job easier, but its a good thing your mate had some training.

What he said... There's a reason I have four guns within three feet of my bed.  :)

[laugh]  Four seems like overkill to me, but whatever you like.  We keep two handy, one for me and one for my wife.

crazy story
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Leroy_Lane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Leroy_Lane)

Lane received a 25-30 year sentence in Massachusetts for the attack on the teenage girl.[3]
New Jersey sentenced him to 50 years for the murder of Monica Massaro.[6]
In Pennsylvania Lane made a deal to plead guilty in order to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to 10-20 years for the attempted murder of the woman in York County, and 48-life for the murder of Darlene Ewalt.[6]

Ramses and Privateer, thanks for the links. I learned some other things from them. From the video,I see that their daughter called 911 and Kevin kept yelling "Get my gun!" even though he didn't have one, I think it threw the killer off and made him think he was going to get shot. I was wondering how Jeannie was able to keep a hold of the knife and I see that it had a notched back so I think thats's how it didn't keep slipping back out of her hands.
I agree with you guys that a firearm would have been a good thing to have but would you have automaticly (sp.?) grabbed it to check on your daughter? Or would you have sleepily stumbled to her room saying "What's the matter, honey?" It wasn't like she was screaming, they just heard a slight noise, like a yelp. Once you saw what was going on, would you have tuned around to go get your gun or would you jump on the mother make the beat with two backser? Even if Kevin jumped on him and Jeannie went to get the gun, Kevin could have been stabbed!
It's hard to second guess this awful situation. I'm just glad it worked out the way it did.

Kopf, I am unsure what you mean by your "HUH?" emoticon, whether you don't agree with my post or if my writing is not clear.
(as is often the case)  :)

What? You only have four? [laugh] [laugh]

I am a huge fan of ventilating dirtbags. Spent WAY too much time working at my county's criminal courthouse passing their cases for ever and ever. It's like why in the hell didn't somebody blow your sorry ass away at the time? [bang] >:( Shit... I would have done it. In TX no Grand Jury would true bill me for doing it. [thumbsup] Guess that's why I keep living here. ;D
