The "oh for make the beast with two backs's sake" thread, or the larger more serious version of "little things that annoy you"
Found out this morning that the sewer line from house to road needs replaced. It started backing up so they put the camera down there and since it's old terracotta and been violated too many times by tree roots it has collapsed here and there and slipped out of position.
So now I have to find $9000 that I don't have to cover the excavator and replacement of some sidewalk that will be destroyed in the fixing process.
Looks like laundry at my inlaws house and I'm not yet sure what we'll do about showers.
[bang]
I have been in that exact bendover position. I "own" a section of road in Michigan that had to be torn up to fix the line. And all that occurred after I (me, not a landscaper) relandscaped the front yard. And this includes major headbanging issues w/the plumbing contractors and numerous other headaches not worth mentioning for fear of a mental setback.
My sympathies. A major "OFFS" for sure. Good luck.

I had one of those... I was taking up the old tile & cement board in my last bathroom remodel. I nearly fell through the subfloor because the PO had done a hasty remodel in response to a leak around the toilet. Problem was, the subfloor was already rotting, and rather than fix it, just tossed the concrete board over it. Needless to say, that remodel suddenly got more time consuming and expensive.

Anyone in your area do trenchless repair (i.e., pipe bursting)? It should be cheaper...just need a pit at each end. This happened to me and we replaced the entire line with HDPE using pipe bursting. Hell of a lot easier and faster than trenching the entire thing.
My OFFS:
Returned home from Christmas travels to find my house had been burglarized. [bang] Back door kicked in, and anything small had been taken (home and work laptops, Wii, wife's jewelry, etc).
Silver lining is they didn't break anything (other than the back door frame), and my wife doesn't have any expensive jewelry except her wedding ring, which she had with her.
Sux though.

I'll look into this, thanks
Had the same problem last December. Thankfully the city emergency water dept. crew that arrived at 10pm and worked until 2:00AM found the problem (like yours) but it was on the alley side of the fence not in my yard. So it was their work and expense. Had it been in my yard I would have needed to take down my fence and have a plumbing company come in with a backhoe and dig up my yard to fix it. Mega dollars out the door!! [bang] [bang] [bang] I feel your pain. :P
We had a couple of 6 inch chemical waste lines done recently at one of our water treatment sites, about 25 yards under a large concrete driveway, all done in a day.

That's a nice chunk to lay down..especially right after Christmas. Looks like all the presents will have to be returned! [thumbsdown]
Hopefully, you can find cheaper alternative as suggested.
J..did that just happen?! [thumbsdown]

Sorry to hear it ML.
My OFFS happened 4 years ago.
Returned from vacationing in Cozumel to find my home with the first floor 3 inches under water. Water was pouring out the front door to greet my wife and I. The hot water line from the dish washer had a gash in it.
Took 4 weeks to get everything sorted. Talk about a pain in the arse.

That's worse than my offs but I'm betting insurance covered it. Homeowners doesn't cover sewer because its outside the house :P
sorry to hear kev :-\
i want to make a joke about you breaking the potty...
but, i won't because this is a serious thread, and you might not think it's funny
[laugh]
My last big OFFS moments were right after I started working on my old house here in Maine.......

Thankfully yes, insurance covered it.
Good luck with your OFFS situation. Maybe if every forum member sent ya one dollar..........
Wait, that's been suggested before. It didn't go we'll that time, best not do that. [cheeky]
Well today is the day.
My front yard is all dug up. They brushed the water line with the excavator bucket and because it was old rusty steel it immediately burst. Blessing in disguise there. I'm having them replace the whole line.
Also my whole house smells like poop.
Old poop.
mmmm...

mmmm...
Yeah that.
On the upside they didn't have to tear into the road.
$1500 savings on permits.
bonus...
did they have to dig up the sidewalk?
Another question...
if they splice in now on your side of the line, and then have to go back in to finish the job because it fails again in the last few feet is there really any savings by the time they haul the equipment back in and everything?

Look dude...we don't judge around here. Some people just have a natural aversion to soap and water. We understand. [cheeky]

The sidewalk survived untouched.
I'm not having the just fix the bad section. The water line will be new from the junction at the road all the way into the house. They're also adding a back flow preventer since we didn't have one.
The sewer line was more fubared. There is a good section of pipe coming out of the house and a good section sticking out from under the sidewalk. They're adding plastic pipe between the two.
At the house, the 4" line had a 3.9" root inside it.

My OFFS? The transmission on my car is dying it doesn't have thousands of miles left, maybe only dozens. And its not worth spending $2200 - $3900 (quotes vary) on a new transmission to go in a car that's worth $1400. And money is pretty tight since I am getting married in May. So a friend is willing to sell me a beater that will probably hold together for year for less than $2000, which I can barely swing but still. [thumbsdown]
What are you currently driving?
OFFS! the simple things..
lots to do. make a list(s). plan the day. over schedule.
forget the list at home...

Having a smoke/fire alarm go off in a hotel at 3:42AM for no reason was a little unnecessary this morning.
My water line broke last year but the city just ran a new one under the road. They guy said "this new line will out live both of us." They replaced the water meter as well, new box and everything. But now I'm a little worried about the part from the house to the meter. I have future plans of replacing the bathroom with a newer bigger one so maybe I can replace that section, at that time.
Mrs. Brimo has hurt her back, now laid out on the couch..FFS

Got that right. No insurance coverage for me either.
The toliets and showers all backed up from the blockage (thank God we were at home when it happened, the tub full of rinse water in the clothes washer was the final straw) and flooded our bedroom and my wife's closet. We had no idea it was happening until my wife started screaming "holy shit" when she walked in our bedroom!
Every carpet cleaning company I called to wet/dry vac the carpets said "no way". They all wanted $800-$1,000 to pull up all the effected carpet and padding and haul it away. They had liability concerns due to potential mold issues down the road since it was sewer water and not "clean" water like a pipe break or water heater.
I said make the beast with two backs it and just about wore out my 6 gallon Shop-Vac. Bet I spent 8-10 hours vacuuming up water over a couple of days. Then ran 20" box fans 24/7 for a week with the ceiling fan on high. Sprayed a shit ton of Nature's Miracle odor killer and used as much carpet fresh powder as I could buy.
Sleeping in the guest bedroom for a few nights was like a mini vaction. [laugh] And no mold ever appeared. Royal pain in the ass but still a win. ;)
That's no fun. I tell you about the water line break that went on for 3 weeks and just sprayed and sprayed inside the building sometime.

She doesn't need that...
not that you do either...but...
Lucky for us we've got a couple of physiotherapist mates, they came straight over and did a bit of accupuncture and some taping up. Last time this happened Mrs B was out for a week and that was while she was in good shape. She is still nowhere near recovered from the chemo and radiotherapy though she was starting to feel much better. This is a big physical and psychological blow to her.
Awww - that's tough. I hope your friends' work on Mrs Brimo helps her out. Good, fast and full healing vibes for this setback.
The best to you and Mrs B from the wife and I.
I hope she gets better soon.
Another one?
This is getting ridiculous.

So....Mrs Brimo has been a bit off the last couple of months, thinking it's a hangover from the chemo and the other nasty shit, tests came back today, Dengue Fever or one of the other Flavivirus, further tests required..... yay. :-[
:(
That's no good.

that's terrible :-\
feel better soon mrs. brimo
To a quick and complete recovery Mrs brimo!
All of the above! Keep us posted and give her our cyber well wishes! Will be thinking of her....
Best get well soon to Mrs. Brimo
Thanks guys and gals, I have passed on the cyber well wishes. The unfortunate thing about these types of virus is that you just have to ride it out.
