It's the term used between lm and myself in reference to doing something that by nature, you would normally avoid doing.
Last year I quit my job at Cycle Gear (aka biltville) and went to work as an substitute teachers aide for our local alt ed high school classrooms ( kids with ankle monitors and the like). And just recently I started subbing in the county special ed classrooms.
Me and school do not mix well, so pretty much every day I eat a frog. ;D
I like learning, but I suck at school. A few weeks ago I had a mini panic attack while helping kids with math. Me and math have been at odds for years.
In an attempt to fatten my brain, I decided to cook me up a elephant sized frog.
I decided the best way for me to help the kids is to first fix me.
I just enrolled in basic feet wetting college courses about an hour ago. Classes start on Monday.
My mini goal is to get an associates degree and apply for a permanent position in a special ed classroom.
The magic of being a sub aide is... I get to see a variety of kids with different needs, and if I find a classroom I like, I can fine tune later studies to that specific specialty.
Awesome [clap]
Rock on. [bow_down]
Very cool, Joel!
I'm starting my third semester of part-time high school teaching -- in math, which I'd gotten away from as fast as I possibly could way back when -- and it still freaks me out a little bit when the bell rings to start class.
One stunt I stole from our daughter's favorite math teacher: he rolled his GSXR into the classroom one day and told the students to "Make it Math."
I shamelessly swiped the idea, and here's what happened:

If you get the opportunity, try a moto in the classroom. It's a great way to introduce ideas like volume, velocity, ratios and all kinds of other cool stuff.
Last year, one of the girls in my class who was pretty much completely checked out the whole semester, a student I figured was just beyond my skills to reach, just lit up and nearly led the class discussion that day - she'd helped a friend rebuild a Chevy 350, and suddenly felt like she could really contribute something on what goes on inside a motor. It was one of those moments that just made me grin uncontrollably.
I imagine you have a lot of those (and more than a few of the other kind, too). On balance, would you say you're developing a taste for frog?

BP = badass phrog eater :)
Awesome move!
Best of luck to you! [thumbsup]
and there is this for you... ;)

I haven't developed a taste for frog yet....going to school for work everyday is a challenge, so i figure going to school for school is going to be even more a challenge. The thought of being the old guy in a room full of teenagers and twenty somethings is not something I'm looking forward too. Being 49 and struggling with basic math is embarrassing.

Ridiculous. The embarrassed part anyway. You should be proud!

Q: What's the best way to eat a frog?
A: One leg over each ear.
Very cool! [thumbsup] [clap]
No better person than you, BP, to lead this charge. [thumbsup]
another +1 for the positive encouragement BPJ....and on your age and being in school....I have a picture of me when I was like 6 with my grandmother from the mid to late 70's from when she graduated with her degree in her cap and gown and all for to be a liscenced social worker so she could help people....older people going back to school isn't such a weird or uncommon thing at all...

You go BP! Great inspiring thread. Love it. [thumbsup] [clap] [bacon]
I had a couple of false starts with math classes. The Kiss of Death for me was falling behind. My unsolicited and free advice is to really pay attention, don't miss any classes and don't let anything go past you or over your head. If you don't understand something, raise your hand and ask for an explanation or talk to the teacher after class. I think one advantage of a community college is that teachers at the community colleges are generally teaching because they like to teach and are better teachers and care about their students, compared to professors at universities who are there to publish technical papers.
I ended up taking and passing whole lot of serious math classes and I think half my battle was forcing myself to pay serious attention.
I really like your Eating a Frog term and I'm gonna use it as a teachable moment to point out to my wife that she has some frogs she should eat.
Here's an excellent tutorial, maybe after watching it two or three times you could cancel your math class. Wish I'd seen it earlier on before wasting so much time in school.
