Title: DT biciclette and corsa di biciclette thread
Post by: eltristo on July 02, 2008, 10:03:38 AM
Right.  A proper place for bicycle related talkery.  I'll start.  I just realized that I am going to be traveling during (almost) the entirety of le Tour.  I'll get to record and watch the first, oh, 3 stages, then I'm off.  Poo.

Funny, or not, they won't let Contador or his team (Astana?) race this year even though all the bad boys are gone. Contador is going to work towards the Vuelta de Espana anyway.

Aye, Leipheimer as well.  So it's done then?   Last I heard (at least a few weeks ago) there were still deliberations.  Boo!

Well that's a bloody shame.  So when does le Tour kick off officially?  And what channel is carrying it on high-def?  ;)

Starts this Saturday. Usually OLN carries it but hey, I have no cable or satellite dish so what do I know?

What was Levi's offense? Other than being an American?

Does he really need to commit any other offense?  After what those damn Americans have done to the tour in the last eight years...   [evil]

There may be a new channel this year. Versus?? I was watching a bunch of video streaming clips last night. Good stuff.

The prologue invite sounds good. Maybe we could wrap & spray the Daytona pipe while we're at it.

I found out that Levi is another member of the Astana team and that is why he's out.  See, you have to change team names. Team High Road is the old T-Mobile team and they got invited.  [roll]

Sorry it took so long to get back but, yes, it's all an Astana problem.  And VS is the new channel, as of last year.  This year should be fine; last year they picked up Al Trautwig as the "lead commentator" over Phil, Paul, and Bobke. He was a disgrace.  I think he's an old college basketball guy, or something, and he couldn't tell a derailleur from a finishing nailer.  He may have even been on for the last 2 years. Anyeay, looks like his incompetence caught up with him; I saw him covering the US Men's Olympic gymnastics trials.   [thumbsup]

Can!!

Shoot me a PM or call me and we'll set a time.  Did you call yesterday afternoon? I left my phone at home and when I checked it there was a missed call from a number that was vaguely familiar.

Nope, wasn't me that called.  Must have been another fan.  ;)

I need to find out what time the prologue starts, and will then let you know the plan.  Ok, found out that the Tour starts at 1400.  Want to do the work before that and then watch?

But more importantly, where did you guys end up riding today?

The main group started in town, went over Tantalus in the reverse direction (up Round Top and down Makiki Hgts) then over Pali to Norfolk. I picked them up down by Castle Hospital. We did the Norfolk run the same direction as we usually go on the motorcycles. Then down into Waimanalo where I flatted going over some sort of big ass bolt that just appeared out of nowhere, hidden by the riders in front who didn't see it. Even though I yelled out "FLAT" the group took off and left me there. Oh well. Got it fixed and took off in a power run through the back of Waimanalo. I never found them so I turned around and retraced my path back up and into Kailua. 25 miles finished me. I was riding fast, for me, and not enough dinner or breakfast made me run out of gas.

I have to be at the shop to deliver a car at 11:00 am. After that I'm on my own. I'll have special paint, safety wire pliers and stainless wire. All you need is the wrap & warm water. Call me with directions.

Wrap, check.  Warm water, check.  Plus, I have some of the securing strips/straps that Ron's sold as well.

when i found it the day before the auction ended, it was $650ish.  I was excited.  Obviously the price didn't hold.

Yeah, but the whole bike sold for $1500. Wow! That's still an outrageous deal. Here I was thinking that I could sell my frame & forks for that much. Boy did I sober up in a hurry.

Hell yes a good deal, but too much for this cowpoke.

No shit!  That is a stupid good deal!!  I can't recall, does that frame have butted ti tubes?  If so then it is basically the same frame as mine and DAMN they ride nice.  Too bad a "54" would have been too small for you Tristan...  Still can't get over how cheap it went for.  Must make sure Alex does not see this and then compare to what I paid for mine...

It is basically the same frame you have. Plus the Dura-Ace and the wheels. Whooeee. I hope that doesn't become a benchmark.

I went back and looked at it again. The buyer scored super big time. FSA carbon, Kysirium wheels. That bike went way too cheap.

Yeah, the Ksyriums alone are most of the selling price.

I thought it was a 58, which is essentially my size.  Not that it matters, cuz I let it go.  [bang]

My bad, it is/was a 58.  make the beast with two backs!  Sucks you weren't able to get it.  I can't believe the seller didn't have a reserve on the thing.  MSRP on the id8 frames (the one I have) is over three grand!

Yeah, I let it go.  I'm a little bummed, I mean, I watched the auction end, thought to myself, 'self, that's a pretty darn good price still.'   But, I'm about to go on vacation, the monster still needs love, etc.  Oh well.

Another good deal will come your way at a better time my friend.  Too bad you couldn't have bought my old Bianchi.  I think you would have liked it...

Now it's time to watch the Tour stages that I recorded.

I had a very nice Bianchi a few years back.  It was the last year that they made lugged steel, in Celeste, of course.  Not the lightest bike around, but beautiful and seriously plush.

EDIT

This is pretty much it, only it was a 97, so I had Chorus/Athena with dual control levers and deep dish Campy aero wheels.  Hardest tire change ever.

That's right!  You need to get your other Italian steel framed beauty back together again.

We have been grinding up Tantalus for the last few nights after work. Not this weekend but the next weekend there is a two stage race. 1st day is a time trial up Tantalus, 2nd day is a road race around Norfork, 14 laps for the old geezers. I forget how many the youngsters have to turn. No matter to me in any case as I will be support. I have been told I have to race next year.  :(
