When did helmets get soo expensive. 900 for an arai, 750 for a shoei. I know I'm talking top if the line models.I have a shoei x11 for 10 years want to replace it and I know I didn't pay 700 for it.
That's what happens when we get out of touch.
When I replaced my RX-7 3 years ago with an AGV it would have been $700 for the new Arai.
BTW...10 years is pushing it on a helmet. ;)
Ya I was thinking that. I was thinking shoei x-12
What about the RF line? A mid range helmet is probably steps better than a decade old top-of-the-line

my 2 Shark helmets came from xtreme supply . . between them no more than $250.00 between both and free shipping and my nolan came from dennis kirk long time ago , , didn't pay more than $100+free shipping . . .
One thing to keep in mind regarding closeout helmets is they might be several years old.
I'm not saying it's a safety issue, but if you do track days and they have age restrictions it could be a consideration.

I said...'might'. ;)
If you aren't bumping you head on things, what is it that makes time an issue with helmets? Do they go 'bad', or is it just that time = technological obsolescence?

The materials?
The EPS (e.g. styrofoam) liner degrades over time to due heat, sweat, hair/face oils, etc etc... and thats the only shock absorbing liner you have in the helmet.
^^^ Thought has it.
Ever find an old styro cup? Notice how a new one flexes while the old one cracks and crumbles when you squeeze? That's material that's inside the helmet - I'd rather not have it crumble away if I need it.
So what is general guidance? 5 years? Is that the high or low end?
I use 5 years as a rule of thumb, easier than spending $20K on medical bills.
