Title: Painting your lid
Post by: dropstharockalot on July 03, 2008, 05:04:55 AM
My knucklehead co-worker got the tinker bug last night and 1) sanded all the clearcoat off this helmet, then 2) tried to rattle-can it.

Oops.

So, now that it looks like roadsquirrel, how should he go about returning it to presentable?

Thx!

Well since helmet painting usually costs no less than 5 bills, he should probably just live with it and realize he's a dumbass.

[laugh]    Let's see some pictures of your "co-worker's" helmet...

I thought about it breifly, but didnt want to have a similar experiance.  I was planning on using Krylon Fusion spray because it binds with plastics.  Some spray paints bead up on certain plastics and look like shit, the fusion stuff might solve that problem.

Yes, in this case, there is actually a co-worker.   When I'm lying to you, I'll start the story with "I've got a buddy..."  Besides, when I pull some boneheaded stuff,  I cop to it.  There's evidence in the "Target Fixation" thread.

I told him to go ahead and join the board himself, but he doesn't own a Duc.  I think he fears teasing because he owns a Honda Shadow.  I tried to let him know that this place is cooler than that, but he still held off.  That, and he's actually one of these "good employees" that actually does things that are "work-related" on "company time."

The advice about the krylon that sticks to plastic is the type of thing he was looking for when he asked me to post. I'll forward.  I'll share the part about $500 and him being a dumbass, but I think he's already regretted his D-I-Y venture.

Thx!

Whats wrong with it? Aside from looks? If you really want to use a rattle can, just....

sand of all the shit he did.

1) wash with something like simple green
2) air dry
3) tack cloth it
4) dupli color sandable primer x 3
5) sand
6) spray paint color of your choice, i perfer the dupli color spray cans just because of the fan spray nozzle. If not, then get an airbrush kit and get the paint you want online.

if you go with the spray paint route..... make sure you clear the nozzle before every spray, aka spray off target for 1-2 seconds then begin the spray off the object, carry it through, past the object then spray again. Do as many coats as you perfer, i would do 2 light, 1 wet, sand, 2 light, 2 wet done.

The krylon paint that you are talking about is calle Krylon Fusion.

does he have a website? $80 bucks is worth it, considering the costs of supplies to paint it yourself.

How cool are these discussion boards that obscure stuff like painting a ram's head on a helmet can be referred in a 'bin there/done that' sense by another contributor.  It's the Jungian Collective Unconscious.  Man is that cool!  Now some idiot can google helmet painting and ram's heads and come across this thread.
