Title: New leather jacket break in?
Post by: DucHead on April 21, 2013, 07:30:39 PM
I did a search, but came up empty.

Does anyone have tips for breaking in a new, stiff leather jacket (in addition to wearing it)?

Thanks!

You could probably apply a good conditioner a couple times within the first month - but really wearing it is the only way to do the fundamental break in.

Lexol and/or mink oil.

And sweat. Lots and lots of sweat.

Put it on.  Step into a hot shower and soak it through.  Go for a ride until it's dry.

Voila.  Broken in!

Whatever you do, do NOT exceed 4,000 rpm during the first 1000 miles that you wear the jacket! Then slowly increase the rpms for the next 2k miles until your first mink oil change!

I apply Lexol and place the item in the dryer on the "air" cycle (no heat) to tumble for about an hour.

I bought my new jacket over the winter and wore it on my commutes to work (in the car) for a couple of weeks. Not the most comfortable option, but I think it helped.
Did that with my new gloves too.
