I rode down to the store to get some lunch and someone backed into my Monster. They knocked it onto the right side and the side stand has punched a hole into the crankcase. progressive insurance sent a flatbed and it is now home and the oil is running out.
The stores cameras have it recorded and they will provide the footage to the insurance company, and my friends in the store are witnesses. The driver has Allstate.
Is there a snowball's chance of getting this repaired?
depends on how much damage was done to the bike. If he costs to repair it (like new motor and body work) exceed the value, then they may give you a choice of getting a new bike or repairing. Repairing it then might give it a salvaged title
The end broke off of the CRG clutch lever, the left mirror is scraped up, and there is a hole in the crankcase.. That appears to be the extent of the damage. How much to replace the crankcase?

Thousands. :-[ I know that's not the accuracy that you're looking for and if there is any damage to the steering stops on the steering neck then they might even total it. Pretty weird that it got knocked onto the right side but that the kickstand punched a hole on the left side case. I mean I know the stand is on the left side and all but that's a pretty hard whack on the left side to get a hole. I hate parking my bike around cars and will go out of my way to get it out of their way.
They HIT the right side, knocking onto the left. Brain phart due to shock and PTSD.
One of my customer's '07 1198 recently was totaled out the same way.
Prolly be cheaper to buy a good used motor than trying to repair/replace the crankcase.
Sorry to hear about your troubles man. That just sux!
Sorry to hear.
Your only chance at clean title if it is a total loss is to ask the adjuster to write an estimate for a little less than total loss. If there is frame damage, like bent/broken steering stops or any bends or cracks it will be totaled. Then your only choices are buy it back salvage or let it go.
I really don't think that there is any frame damage, butt the guys at Moto Corsa will be the ones that determine that. The bike has 7500 miles on it and I have had it since January 18th. I have become far to attached to it in this short period of time!
I've been a year round rider since about 1966, and this has become my favorite bike in all that time. If it can't be returned to per-incedint condition I would be looking to find another of the same model and year-ish.
Year round Since 1966 :o, Nice!
Sorry to hear that spike. I hope everything works out for you. My EVO and i will pour out a 40 for you and yours.... :-\
Thanks for all the sympathy! I need it! The thought that this could result in a total is giving me the heeby-jeebies.
I have a seat at Rick Mayers getting done and handlebars from Suburban Machinery on the way!

If they do total it you could always buy it back from insurance and fix it yourself. The busted crankcase is going to be the biggest expense. Like others have said, it might be cheaper to just find a used motor and swap it out.
Or, it you have troubling finding an S model you could salvage the Ohlins and other parts off your bike to install on a non-S model.
Since there is a good chance they will total it out I would put all the stock parts back on it and remove your aftermarket goodies (don't think the insurance company will reimburse you for those unless you declared them). Any chance you could replace the Ohlins forks and monotube with standard spec parts before they salvage it (if they do) and haul it away? That way you can just pick up a standard 1100 or better yet an 1100evo + Ohlins = 1100SEvo [evil]
Just a piece of friendly advice. I went down a similar road recently. (stolen car, then recovered). I didnt realize how emotionally invested I was with that damn car. I started wasting soooooo much time trring to figuire out, how I would get the pieces I wanted used. Should I buy it back? What about salvage title. It just started becoming a nightmare of possibilities. In the end, I walked away.. took the check and bought myself something slightly better.. with no headaches regarding rebuilding or downtime. In the end, walking away, and starting ovber fresh was a relief.
Very true. I had a friend who had to buy his stolen 67 Beetle back from insurance several times(yea, I know). It was a rare car, and it was also a family heirloom, and not very replaceable. On anything which is easily replaceable, like a modern bike. It is probably best to cut losses and begin again, as tough as that may be.

+1
This is my thinking as well. I use my bike for my primary transport so I don't want to spend time fiddling about. That is what the Triumph is for!
If the Monster is totaled I will either look for another M1100S or (shudder) buy an 1100Evo.
It just so happens that there is an 1100S in the local Craigslist with 1040 miles on it. ???
Sorry to hear about the grief caused to you by a careless driver.
This has made me think about getting sliders installed for something that could happen when I'm not even near the bike. Time to start the Christmas list...
My bike has Speedymoto frame sliders. They didn't have a chance to help!
The last time this happened to me was in 1977 when I had a new Moto Guzzi 850 T3 and was parked outside a tavern.
This one hurts worse.
Sorry to hear about your bike. :(
I feel your pain. I dropped my bike myself and wanted to [bang]
I love my 1100S, she is beautiful. I searched for a long time trying to find a bike with very low miles and all original condition. I would make those responsible pay >:(

Good recommendation here, IMO.
Sorry about your bike, Use the cash for a new Evo, I am loving mine ;D
I once had my Buell knocked over in a parking lot at a rough little bar in San Bernardino. There were 20 HA's there that night. Long story short it was out of my control but the guy that hit my bike had a big mouth and was pretty unapologetic. I had little to nothing to do with him getting his jaw broken, two bouncers getting hospitalized and the gunshots in the parking lot telling all the boys to leave.
It was a huge scene. In the end the tip over still cost his insurance company thirty dollars under the total price as there was a dent on the frame. $5800.00 in my hand and all it cost was a frame slider to go over the small dent and new clutch and brake lever. Total cost of repairs was under $125.00. I think I drank the rest. [drink]
There are some great post here, thanks a bunch everyone!
I just had the bike towed over to Moto Corsa here in Portland, and they are being very supportive. The concensus is total loss, it is the third they have seen so far this year. They are going to bat for me with the insurance company when that becomes necessary and have several options for me going forward.
One is the possibility of doing a buy back to salvage the Ohlins for a new bike and then they buying the remainder. We shall see how this all pans out, and thanks again for the moral support!
Ok, I have found a 2009 M1100S locally that has 1040 miles on it, was purchased 2 years ago at Moto Corsa, and has had the 600 mile service done. The timing belts would be timed out, butt what else? This is too good sounding to not be suspicious.
OK, it is almost 2 weeks since Donald had his case punched. Last Monday Allstate called me up and told me that as they had not heard from the shop that they wanted their rental car back. I explained that the shop was not opened until Tuesday and I would get them some info, so they backed off of that. When I spoke with the shop they told me that they were having trouble getting the details of an estimate together due to the little details, like Leo Vince was not giving them information about replacing one silencer as opposed to two. One side was damaged so the insurance company would not want to replace both, butt single units did not seem to be available.
Finally on Wed afternoon I got a call from the shop that they had put together as close an estimate as they could and called it in. By Friday I had not heard anything so I called Allstate and they told me that they had no information from the shop. I gave them the phone number of the shop as they could not figure out how to get it, and that was around noon. I still have not heard further. The shop told me that the estimate was on the cusp of what would be considered total, so there would be some possibility that they would go with repair.
Sorry to hear it is not going smoothly. Funny how insurance companies always want our money on time, yet they can take awhile. Here in Cali I had a shop charge me $150.00 for the estimate on my old Buell and they kept the amount just under total. The insurance company cut me a check and I fixed the bike myself. For a lot less than the estimate amount.... Just a thought. [beer]
Finally! Last Wed A guy from the car rental place called to tell me that Allstate was not paying for my rental car past the 13th! I called the "express claims" department to complain and they told me that I had to talk to the field rep, I finally got hold of him and he said that he couldn't do anything and I had to call "express claims"! I kept him on the line and told my story of woe and he decided that I had been wronged and that no one was communicating, so he would take care of it, and he did. By Thursday afternoon he had a generous offer for me.
Friday I talked to the lady in Bothell who told me where to send the title, I delivered it, and a check should be on the way.
I will have enough to buy the above mentioned 1100S will bucks left over. It already has a Termy kit and DP tail tidy.
Major bummer- the bike has a CW tail tidy. :'( I bought it anyway. [beer]
Back in the saddle again!
Congrats!
Same bike? Actually.... Pics!
Pics?

I have an entire stock tail if you are feeling the need to switch it back out. I did not like the CW kit at all so I bought a Rizoma. If you ride in wet weather I can't recommend a tail tidy..........
I'm finding that the DP tail bag does a pretty good job of blocking the back splash!
