In preparation for a couple of long rides I'll be doing this summer, I wanted to make it easier to strap gear onto my bike. I built this completely out of steel and hardware purchased at Ace Hardware, probably no more than $20 total. To bend the four posts I heated them up with a torch and bent them by hand over a die for a pipe bender. Small plates are welded to those four pieces that have holes for U-Bolts to bolt to. The welds aren't pretty, the whole thing isn't 100% level and square, but it is structurally sound and it will work.

you might want to use plastic or rubber between the mount and you frame.
it looks like it wouldn't take much to turn it into saddle bag frames to ride with a passenger.

Yeah, I'm trying to find something thin enough to use. I had originally planned on using some rubber I had laying around that is meant for mounting speakers on wakeboard towers, but that ended up being too thick.
As far as saddlebags, yeah I'm sure someone could modify it to work that way, but I built it for my application, which won't include two-up riding, or a need for that much luggage.
McMaster-Carr is a good source for rubber. Now all that you need is a milk crate!

As for rubber, Dental dams are cheap, thin silicone(some are latex, avoid) sheets. You may be able to find them at a local drug store, or adult goodies shop. lol
Here are some cheap online. Not sure if they are silicone of not though: http://www.undercovercondoms.com/Condoms/Hot-Dam/333/92/Hot-Dam-Nonlatex-Dental-Dam.html?zmam=34062620&zmas=8&zmac=86&zmap=PK842 (http://www.undercovercondoms.com/Condoms/Hot-Dam/333/92/Hot-Dam-Nonlatex-Dental-Dam.html?zmam=34062620&zmas=8&zmac=86&zmap=PK842)
