Title: Hello from DFW
Post by: pesto on July 18, 2013, 10:44:49 AM
Hi! I'm a 34 year old brand spankin' new rider. Just bought my first bike, a 2013 Monster 696 and am having fun motoring the rezzies in my D/FW suburb. I hope to find some open road to put some miles on this weekend (the first hopefully rain free weekend since I bought it!).

Nice meeting ya'll. Pic below!

I'm on OKC but may be down that way for service if I can't find anything local

That's dedication  :). Hopefully by the time I'm due for service I'll feel comfortable riding to the service center downtown from my suburban home. I don't have a trailer and I can't imagine a ride from OKC.

That's amazing! Yeah OKC to DFW is probably not that bad to you then as long as traffic cooperates :). Sounds like you've been riding a long time. I hope I have similar success.

Welcome! Nice looking bike! Don't let the trouble-makers here to torture you into changing that look.  ;) They'll be free with YOUR wallet.  8)

Consider a 14T front sprocket at your first service and you'll find 6th gear. Suggest you find some mature, experienced riders and follow them for a while and watch what they do and why. You'll need to learn that you are invisible. Have fun!

Rubber side down!

The mirrors. Something must be done. I'll be scanning for more functional/attractive mirrors first, then the license plate holder :).

Great advice and please keep it coming. I'm no speed demon and don't have anything to prove to anyone, so I'm all ears.

I'll be riding with a buddy of mine this Sunday on my first trek outside of the neighborhood. Heading out early Sunday before the traffic gets in. Hopefully will pick up some stuff if I can keep his 'busa in view :D.

It's your bike, so do whatever you like. Agreed the mirrors could show a better view rearwards, although they adjust more than you might think.

Just be aware that they are not a total afterthought. Both they and the bikini fairing were designed in Ducati's wind tunnel to deflect air and cause minimal turbulence. If you remove either, get some fitted ear plugs.  8)

Busa? I said "mature".  ;D Ideally you want to learn some survival skills.

I'll keep that in mind about the mirrors, thanks. And yeah, we'll see what he's like on a bike when we get out there tomorrow :).
