Hello all. I just picked up a 2007 S4RS today. My first time riding a Ducati. Have loved the look and sound of Ducatis. While stationed in Germany around 2002, a guy in my apartment complex had one. LOVED the sound. Didn't have a bike or endorsement at that time. While there, I bought a HD RoadKing. Still ride it; it just turned 76,000 miles. Bought a 2010 BMW R1200RT in September of 2010. She's sitting due to warranty issues (will explain upon request) at 30,000. BTW, I ride year round, mostly to work, which is 100 miles round trip. Married with kids and spend a lot of time with the misses, so my ride to work is mostly the only time I get to ride. I will, however, take any opportunity to ride. I've been riding over ten years straight. Fearnot was my company's motto, when I was attached to the 21st Combat Support Hospital at Ft. Hood. Born in 1969. Sounds good and suggests a perverted meaning, which I am a bit twisted anyway. Been riding for ten years straight, with a small break due to a cager, but will continue until I can't kick over the seat. Today's ride home was exhilarating and I now "get it", when others explain their passion for Ducati. I bought it to commute. It will take some adjusting to, but the maiden voyage was impressive. Have been looking around and there seems to be a good amount of information, along with personality. Hope to be a regular and I will apologize early for all the questions.
1) what does +1 mean?
Thanks for reading. Will post a pick when able.
Sorry...I live in southwest Virginia.
Welcome!
+1 means that you agree with a previous statement.

Where in SW VA? If that thing has a plastic tank, run it on pure gas. Plenty down there around you! http://pure-gas.org/?stateprov=VA (http://pure-gas.org/?stateprov=VA)
I live outside Martinsville. I do believe we have Pure gas around here. I will check your web link. Looking inside the tank, it does look plastic. Looks like a tan bladder liner, now that I think of it. Why pure gas? I look everywhere I can for nonEthanol gas. The Shells used to carry it, but no longer. We have a place that sells it in regular octane levels, but I am looking for super. I can get racing fuel and could mix it to a specific octane, but would be concerned with damaging the ECU? Thanks for the post.
Curmudgeon,
Much thanks! That site helps a lot! I'll have to plan, but it is ridiculous that nonEthanol gas is getting harder to find. Especially in higher octanes.
No problem! ;)
Your nylon tank will absorb water and swell. There's a book here on this topic. Point is..., it's the ethanol which grabs water out of the air, and that's apart from E-10 being a boondoggle. If you keep your tank full of pure gas, there's not much air to condense.
If you are thinking of blending race gas, that's no biggie and you can get a chart to show how much of an octane boost you are getting with "X" amount of "Y" octane race gas combined with "Z" octane pure gas.
BUT..., be aware that a lot of race gas has ethanol in it now, so CAM 2 260 GT is no longer a good thing. You have to find 260 GTX which usually costs more. Not sure what the sell at VIR any more or what race gas you had in mind.
Thanks again, Curmudgeon. I will check the content of Ethanol in race fuel locally available. Was up late reading about the tank issues. I had no idea. Have wanted a Monster for over ten years and LOVE this thing! It's the best part of my day to get to ride her. I did find a local Shell that supposedly sells nonEthanol 93 octane on my way to work. There also appears to be some swelling of my tank. It has some slight rippling on the side of the tank. The key lock and side rubbers fit rather well on the frame. The bike only had 7100 mi.s on it, but that probably doesn't matter much. The water will separate even it sits there. I've learns so much in such a short time about this bike and brand, but like I stated...I'm gonna ride the crap out of this thing! Emotional Zen at the press of the button!
You are lucky to have that Shell with 93 because you still get the proprietary additive package that way. If you drain that tank over the winter, it may just shrink back into shape, touch wood! Then feed it only pure gas. ;) What town has that Shell, BTW? Not that I get down there that often, but could be handy to know. I'm between Richmond and Charlottesville. Here a local oil company sells straight 93 if I bring my race cans or one of my "toy" cars. Until recently I was driving out to Rt. 29 or Waynesboro to buy 20 gallons at a time!
Curmudgeon: Wow! Waynesboro is a nice hike for you. The place is Lonnie's Shell on Hwy. 704 in Madison, NC. It is off 220, which is on the way to work. I work in Greensboro, NC. I may run the bike out there tomorrow and check it out. I have about a gallon left in it. Should be enough to get there. So even using ethanol treatments with fill ups won't help?
Also if I run all that out and just use pure gas, the tank may shrink back? I only hope. Thanks for the info. I have a few four wheel "toys",too. PM me, if you lik. Mine are of German descent.
Waynesboro is at the top of the Blue Ridge Parkway, so not a tragedy, and Nelson County has more breweries than lights. 8)
Ethanol treatments do nothing to prevent the alcohol from absorbing H2O. They just reduce some of the other ill effects. H2O is your issue with the PA-6 nylon tank.
Using pure gas will definitely help keep it from getting worse. From what I gather, you have to dry it out for a month or two to get it to shrink back, so thoroughly drain it over the winter if you can.
Didn't know that about Nelson County. I try to get on the BRP when I can. It isn't too far from here. I'll try to drain the tank this winter. I can't see riding it in 17 degree weather; that's for the R1200RT.
