Title: PC Gaming Nerds?
Post by: BarneePhife on July 07, 2008, 07:13:15 AM
I'm a self-proclaimed computer gaming nerd.

With that out of the way... are there any other's afflicted with this ailment?  I host the occasional nerdvana gaming events at my home - one of which coming up this month.  If you're interested in more details, send me a PM.

I don't open the event up to strangers - so don't go looking for hobos on the street with a laptop under the arm and invite them over to my house.  The event consists mostly of folks from my job (and their kids who generally end up kicking our arses  :-\).

Oh, and to keep this Ducati related... We'll take a break during the gaming madness and go out into the garage and fire up the Duc's and have a "loudest exhaust" competition at some point during the day.

There's so many out there, it's difficult to find a single big title that everyone and their dog plays.  (think back to the days of Quake and CounterStrike).

So, this one will be a real time strategy game called "Supreme Commander".  If any of you "old schoolers" recall a game called "Total Annihilation", this is the new and improved rendition.

Others we frequently play:
Starcraft, Warcraft III, (yes, oldies but goodies), BattleField 2, Battlefront 2 (Star Wars).

One many of us would like to play, if we could get enough folks to show up:  Team Fortress 2 (in my book, it's the square headlight of first person shooters)

sounding good to me...i don't have a way to get my rig over there currently though.  (and i haven't played WC3 for too long....i can't even think how long it's been since starcraft...i need to dust those off)

on a somewhat related note, if someone has a spare rig that needs some parts, i still have a dual core AMD cpu (3800+) with fan, ddr800 ram (corsair xms), and a BFG 7600GT vid card.  i have no use for it and don't have the motivation to bother with ebay or anything.

WC3 and CS were the games I played back in the day.  Oh and Diablo 1/2

I usually prefer the RTS games to FPS, but CS was a blast.

You probably won't be surprised but Sam has played all of the games mentioned - he's a ringer at Team Fortress... apparently  [roll]  In talking with him about it just now, he'd love to play anytime y'all decide to do this.  And what a great idea this time of year anyway; hang out inside and have fun in the AC, woo-hoo!

Supreme Commander is the game for this LAN party?  I'll have to scope it out and see if my laptop will handle it.  If not I maybe taking a work laptop home one night.

Rich, if you need a ride out there to tote your rig let me know

When is this going down btw?

Cher,

Sam is more than welcome!  If we get our "usuals" show up, there will be a 15 year old boy, and I 'think' two 12 year old boys.  Although, a couple of them were "down" on this particular game and may turn their noses up a the offer.  Even if nobody else in that age range shows up, Sam's still welcome to join in for as long as he likes.

Rich,

I may also have a spare machine for you to use so you don't have to worry about transporting your own.  I generally play SC on my laptop, so my PC is available.  I just need to get a quick refresher on "sharing" of this game.  I think it's pretty tolerant on using one CD key on multiple machines for LAN only games.  Connecting to the internet with the same key surely doesn't work.

cool...i'll go ahead and download the latest when i get home today though, and i can always bring along my machine as well if bryant is able to pick me up on his way.  now i just need to get a couple case fan mods done in the next week.... i picked up an ATI radeon 4850 about a week ago and it runs very HOT.  the Phenom CPU isn't too far behind....   :-\  i have some ISOs on my external drive that i can bring along with a few good titles...i've been loving GRID (and the pirate version can play internet games as well)

that beast was much bigger than expected, too...it was compressed to 2.x gb...and ended up being 6+ gb after decompressed.  then the crack/install took quick a while...but all looks good.  now i just need to play it.

that's awesome!

http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/innovative-alarm-clocks

and bryant: you won't be needing daemon tools for forged alliance after all...it runs without mounting an ISO to a virtual drive.  make sure after you unrar and run setup.bat...that you apply the new registry lines from the crack/readme folder.  also you'll want to ensure you're current with your directx version from MS, as well as the .NET framework (2.0).  i ran through those updates just to be safe, and everything seems to work so far; i'll run through a practice game just to make sure though.

It appears that Forged Alliance (the add-on) is going to be the preferred game.  Therefore, if you don't have Forged Alliance yet, go get it.  It's available (for legitimate purchase) for $20 at Best Buy.

Not sure if this is available as an in-store price, or online only.  If you need to buy the game, do your homework and plan accordingly so you'll have it by the 26th!

I installed it last night, but didn't update directx so I think that's why I was getting an error.  I'll have to give it a go later today since I brought the laptop to work.

I did manage a little WC3 action for a few hours.

Oh yeah, Fry's has the FA for $20 in store, I think the Bestbuy price is online only.

i'll try out the FA after work and see that it plays solidly etc...and see if by chance i'm able to connect to internet games.  can't really test out the LAN, though...

i need to install the WCIII again, and frozen throne...  get some DOTA action going again...that stuff was so much fun.

I was out of it for a while there but broke down and upgraded my rig to run Crysis.

After that it was able to run pretty much everything else so I checked out some new stuff.  Play a lot of Company of Heroes, that game is the bomb.

Sadly not much seems to top the fun factor of CounterStrike circa 2001...  it's just not the same anymore.

Oh yeah, I'm gonna get slaughtered in FA... I'll have do a lot of skirmishes to figure out my strats.

I forgot how much fun WC3 is/was.

WC3 is a blast.  We played that a LOT at the parties over the last 2 or 3 years.  I bet you'll be able to find enough folks interested in a few rounds during this party.  Primarily WC3 Frozen Throne - but got copies of that laying all over the place if you don't have it already.  Ever play the map Exodus?  We've got countless hours trying to beat that one.   This group also likes to play a lot of tower defense maps.  [roll]

seems that some of these 1player games can be considerably harder than the tutorial...what are the odds?

Are you playing FA or just base SC?

The new AI in FA is a real PITA!

I've heard lots of positive comments about CoH but haven't tried it yet.

+1 on CS early dayz ( <--- note the l33t gnerd spelling)

CS beta 3 was probably my favorite.  The little machine pistol kicked everybody's ass.  It was stupid accurate
