My experience was also in person and saw four (almost side by side)  P-51's go low on an overhead pass and as they passed over and I was behind their exhaust, the hair stood up on my neck (not kidding).
I'm not sure you can call the Supermarine Spitfire a "supreme sound" compared to a P-51. At one point they both had Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.
Although if it had been 4 Spitfires going over my head, I would probably agree with you. Youtube video sound cannot compare to hearing it in person.

@ Monsterlover- that commercial is good!

I have heard and seen many engine configurations and designs over the years( in person, video, etc)....still to this day...none compares for me to being on the wall at the 60 foot mark when a top fuel dragster goes by on a sub 4 second pass....

P-51A originally came with an Allison V12.

Brits put a Merlin in it.  Fixed it.

North American Aviation took it back, fixed the British hack job on the cowling, and the P-51B was born.  All the common war-era B, C, and D models were Rolls Royce or Packard Merlins (Packard produced them under license).  One of the greatest engines of all time...

But, for either the Spit or the Mustang, one of the most epic engines fitted would have to be the almighty Rolls-Royce Griffon.

Toward the end of the war, the Merlin was belting out ~1600HP.

The Griffon?  Over 2400 HP.  ;D

They were used on certain variants of the Spitfire.  Also used, at least experimentally, on late-model P-51s.  They were highly desirable as racing engines after the war.  One of the more famous users was Steve Hinton.  Anyone remember the P-51 "Red Baron"?  I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hinton at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, CA, when his crew was restoring a Mk XIX Spitfire, running a Griffon with counter-rotating propellers.  That day was the second time they'd fired it up.  When Dad and I met Steve, he told us if we had time, they'd be pulling the Spit out of the hangar for test runs.  We looked at each other and grinned.  That. Was. Epic.

Here it is, a few years later, all buttoned up and ready to fly:
Spitfire PR.XIX Startup by Steve Hinton at Chino, California (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbgpH2nrn-A#)

The real music starts around 3:00:
Spitfire MK19 (long best of) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nGLlQvaCXc#)

Getting back to pure sounds... while the Merlin is excellent and the Griffon is awe-inspiring, I do appreciate the music of the Allison V1710.
Allison V12 Start-up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llTQLOUe9lg#)
Engine: Allison v1710 in P-40 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce-lGhXcrFM#)
P-40 Warhawk Flyby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t0XstE4D3g#)

Anyway... I love too many engine noises to pick a favorite or dig up examples of each.  Here's a woefully incomplete list:

Eagle Speedster (Jag inline 6)
Jag E-type 3rd gen V12
Every old Ferrari V12 ever made
Dino 246
Lamborghini Miura
Lamborghini Urraco (2.5L V8)
Cadillac V16 (the original)
Allison V1710
Rolls-Royce/Packard Merlin
Rolls-Royce Griffon
Too many Porsche flat-6s to list...
60's Lotus/Ford race cars
Pretty much every pre-Chrysler Maserati (pre-1980?)
Too many vintage Alfas to count...
60's Chevy V8s
Shelby/AC Cobra (289, 427... doesn't really matter, they all sound great)
Almost anything breathing through Weber IDFs, IDAs, or DCO-series carburetors
Old European straight 4's and 6's with Dellortos and/or Stromburgs
Almost any race car made before ~1975
Ducati 916 (notably the 916 SPS... which was the 996cc race motor)
Ducati Pantah air-cooled 2-valvers
More MV Agusta variants than I can recall
Triumph triples
Original Nortons
Motus V4
And yes, even the occasional well-tuned Harley-Davidson

The most important takeway is: there are MANY cool-sounding engines.  I've heard generic Ford 4-bangers (think Duratec) stuffed into Lotus 7 replicas with nice intakes and exhaust systems, and they sound so dramatically different than the car they came out of (usually a Focus) it's astonishing.

Anyway... looking forward to more cool finds in this thread.  I am always down for hearing great engine noises.  [thumbsup]

That's what I thought as well.  The Benelli is a little more... "roarty", though.  Regardless, they both sound great.

The CBX does nothing for me.  It looks horrible from certain angles.

I've seen 900 Benellis for sale a few years ago, but I haven't even seen one at any shows since around 2009.

I suspect that what Travman was hearing was the slightly longer cam duration on the Benelli, as it's an old italian 2-valve motor.
The CBX had pretty tame cams in it.

For me, just about any of the Ferrari V-12s sound the best.

So far, my best experience happened at Deals Gap.  Sitting on the wall of the Overlook, I hear two vehicles absolutely SCREAMING down straighter sections past the lake (Chilowee).  As they enter the tight section, just north of the Overlook, there's plenty of tires wailing along with the chorus of two exotic engines racing up the section.  Everyone has pretty much stopped talking and has turned to see just what the hell is coming.  A few seconds of more tire wailing and screaming motors, and they appear.  It's a modern Porsche (911 GTS, I think) and a Ferrari 430.  They're hauling ass, racing past the overlook at amazing speeds.  The sound of that V8 Ferrari is something I don't think I'll ever forget.  It was amazing.  The Porsche sounded good, but the Ferrari was amazing.

I earned my private pilots ticket at BJC, which was home to some of the forest service's slurry bombers.
No argument that V-12 aircraft engines sound sweet.
Every heard a BIG radial come to life.
They don't start, they come to life one cylinder at a time with lots of whining, popping, and belching huge clouds of smoke until all 7,9,14, 18,.... decide to join the party.

+1, awesome thread idea.  My current favorite.  :)

I've had a hard-on for the Jag XJ13 since seeing the Jaguar episode of Victory by Design.  Such a cool car... both in looks and sound.

Speaking of Jags... I have long had this crazy idea to pick up an old, unloved, cheap XJS.  Strip all the emissions garbage off, have a proper performance exhaust fabbed for it, strip off the fuel injection, and have it breathing through 6 twin-throat Webers.  I can only imagine what that would sound like, and it would be comparatively cheap in the world of cool cars.

Here's the full Jaguar episode of Victory by Design:
Victory By Design Jaguar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3IbF5bJSEU#)

I like watching that one via the web-connected TV... which pumps out the sound through the home theater and a set of big 20-year-old Pioneer speakers.

I like the twin throat webbers idea.  The twin throat carbs (My 280Z has three of 'em) make a nasty little snarl that I love.  It does however tempt on to really put a foot in it just for the sake of hearing the intake snarl!

Don't get me wrong, the Italian exotics always sound amazing (especially the Ferraris) and having had the opportunity to pilot an F430 around the track makes them that much more awesome. Older Jags, bevel drive singles and twins, even the twin turbo inline sixes from BMW are great. The ones that really get me though, are the 3+ rotor rotaries.

Big radials don't "start"... they come to life.

One of my favorite memories is standing right behind Sentimental Journey when they fired up each of those four Wright R-1820 Cyclones.  Fantastic sounds... and I love the smell of 100LL in the morning.  ;D  It was really cool at the fly-in in Prescott, because there were no ropes around it... they just shooed us away from the engines for startup, so myself and a bunch of buddies walked around back and were standing about 10 feet behind the tail when they brought it to life.

This video doesn't do the sound justice, so you'll have to fill in with your imagination.  ;)
