Title: Locked Threads
Post by: ItsaDuc on October 03, 2013, 10:49:01 AM
It never fails.  [roll]

When I hear about a major event in the news or some other tidbit, I always turn to my trusty DMF to get more and sometimes better info than what is presented on the local news. I always find good opinions as well bad (to me) and sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. What I don't get is how each and every one turns south by someone and Ducpainter is then forced to lock the thread due to forum rules.

I get the rules and try to adhere to them so I don't offend anyone. But what I don't get is how each and every thread has the same outcome. I get that everyone has an opinion like an asshole, but it doesn't always need to be shared in a public forum if it is borderline to the forums rules.

I truly do enjoy hearing someone elses opinion on some of the major topics that have been discussed on this board. There have been some great discussions here but have been ended due to someone trying to push their opinion or god forbid quote a political anything... but guess what, THATS THE RULES OF THE FORUM.

If you think its questionable to the rules....it probably is, so leave it out.  :-\

Oh and one more opinion....Ah forget it.   :-X

was that a fart I just heard or is some asshole in a corner grumbling about opposing opinion(s) somewhere?

I'm over it. I'm not trying to be a pain in Nate's Side either. If he says its Politics then It is, as far as this forum goes.

In other news, its been sunny out side so I took the opportunity to crawl under the house and see that things were less than satisfactory under there. Its an old house. I also found my south west Property corner again and raised it about 6 inches so I can see it.

Next I think I will wash the Motorcycle. Have a day.

Something I've done in the past.
If an item I wish to share is iffy, I PM ducpainter or statler first.
That way there's no future problems.

I would have locked it not for what he said but simply because doing would have amused the heck out of me.  I would have also unlocked in a few, just kept it locked long enough to get a good laugh  [laugh] [laugh]

I get where the OP here is coming from  [thumbsup].

That said, I find it pretty much possible to predict with near certainly the threads which will end in lockage....   I'm sure many of us can.  (I'll be surprised if this thread doesn't end that way too).

It's the few who dont get it and/or wont get it and/or dont want to get it that push beyond the rules.

There are many subjects on which I'd like to hear the opinions of my fellow DMFers.... but the rules don't provide for such discussions and so... being respectful of the rules (which is not necessarily the same as agreeing with the rules) I leave 'em alone.

Often though there are ways to make whatever point you wish....  and do so without causing the keys to come a rattling  ;)

RAT900 was the master of that.  He is a hard act to follow, but for those of you who wanna say whatever you wanna say....  his examples are there to learn from.

I blame politics, guns, religion, no religious beliefs, booties, corporations, puppies, and creamy peanut butter for it.

Also, rap, metal, country, and top 40 music.

+1.

Some good, sober-minded folks here of varying backgrounds with whom I'd like to converse on the more touchy subjects, but I get why there are these rules.  I am much happier that the admin is over-vigilent in policing topics than under-vigilent because in the end it keeps this place civilized and fun, even at the loss of an occasional meaningful discussion on controversial topics.

I'm just amazed a certain thread even lasted until page 10.   ;D

Because it doesn't stop there, never has.

Because we don't get paid to monitor people's behavior.

Because people that should know better can't restrain themselves from posting crap that's against the rules in a legitimate thread.

Take some time off.

I really miss the poly-tics board.

There were some fantastic, very well thought out, in-depth discussions and debates.  I feel I learned something everytime a new thread was clicked on.

Unfortunately, the occasional asshats wrecked the entire board.   [bang] [bang]

ADVrider has one that is like the wild west
Gets tiresome, old and predictable.

Not sure I would like that either.

It was the usual exercise of restraint that made the DMF poly-board a delightful experience.

Agreed, this is a rare board almost family.
The down side is the one thing we all have in common is a love of Italian sport bikes, meaning we're all passionate and maybe a little crazy.
Politics is not a good topic for passionate slightly crazy people to debate.

Speeddog layin' down the law!  :o  [cheeky]

This board is better without politics, religion, cop talk, etc. I remember the DML when that stuff was allowed, and I participated. It got old. This is much better...we all get along for the most part!  ;D

You just like Chunky because it looks like you.... snap!

Well, it is better too. But, couldn't pass up the shot.

On topic, all in all the board does a lot better than just about any when it comes to keeping discussions as discussion and not have it spiral down into personal insults, bigoted flames etc. Yeah, some topics will eventually get locked. But as noted already, it's pretty predictable which and when.

On topic. . .

I really think the root nature of the thread is why it gets locked.  Some things you just can't talk about with a large group of people looking on without some, a few or all getting riled.  It's basically impossible to disguise a hot button issue.

There have been threads I hadn't seen yet that I see have the lock icon next to them.  After reading the thread title it never comes as a surprise that the thread got shut down.

That's life in the big city.
