And you didn't need to change out the teams to rest them with one of those mechanical beasts.

I think that one says its 10hp.
But it is going at what , 100 rpm?
That's about 500 lb/ft of torque right?
Very cool. [clap] Love seeing these old engines run.
Makes the father-in-law's 1942 Allis-Chalmers Model B look like a newfangled gadget in comparison. It's a magneto-ignition 4-cyl 4-stroke gasoline engine turning out ~20 HP. Speaking of which, I still have to fix the ignition timing on that bugger...
The Rumely's were kerosene powered.
Pretty sure the ones in the vid are model E's 30 HP drawbar 60 HP belt. 2cyl with a 10"x 12" bore/stroke.
more like 6300 ft lbs

some sort of steam motor for running the fan in the background
it was replaced with a DC motor that the belt goes to now and the whole thing was abandoned years ago and the duct work disconnected

I'll help. That thing looks cool.
Also, 66 bottom plow? Holy crap that's some torque. That was awesome!
Lethe, was your garage a machine shop in the 10's or 20's? that looks like a variable speed take-off from a main line power feed. (very cool) one motor (much like the one that started this thread) ran a shaft that would run multiple pieces of machinery.

yup
The original garage is 20x40 and then in the 60's he added on the 10x40 on the side and the 30x30 in the front.
A bunch of the really cool stuff got auctioned off before we bought the house such as the ice fishing rig the guy built that he'd drive right over to the lake and fish from inside of
That ice fishing rig sounds really cool Lethe! The motor in the attic is plenty cool too.

Three speed, notice the 3 stepped flat belt output pulleys.
Reversible, the 2 pulleys with the grooved collar in between are the input pulleys, the curves "arms" with the jam nuts are some kind of clutch. (the one on the left is probably engaged)
That set-up was placed ninety degrees to and below the main line shaft and the belts were laced such that the input pulleys spun in opposite directions.
Also notice the pulleys are "crowned", to keep the belt centered.
Some hard looking rigs there. [evil]
now you make me want to get it down out of there even more
I have a bunch of old stuff that I want to set aside a corner of the garage for as small museum of sorts.
That thing, an old drill press (a Canedy Otto E20), the old foot operated sewing machine from my father in law's shoe shop and various other oddities.
Sounds like you have the begginings of a cool little industrial collection.
Those drive shafts are very common around here as they were used by many types of wood workers. Lumber mills, furniture makers and more all used them. They usually had wide leather belts stapled into a loop as belts. They ran at a fairly low RPM. Belts could be slid sideways off the pulley wheel to sit slack when a certain machine was not in use.
Sometimes you still see signs/shreds of the leather belts but usually they're disintegrated or eaten by critters.
Yeah... be careful dropping it.
