First the flat slides...and now?
So I get this Christmas card...
from Denver.
Something about a gift of chestnut decking, donning PIF leathers, and falalalala.
But...how could they know we picked chestnut? The plot thickens. It appears you guys went as far as to enlist my supplier in this conspiracy. I couldn't figure out why he was in such a hurry for me to pick a color when I won't be ready for the product until spring.
I'm a fairly good painter, and can fake carpentry. I'm a lousy estimator though. When we started this house project I had a number...I was only off by about 60%. [bang] [bang] [bang] Everything cost more and took longer than I planned, and while building was delayed prices rose even more. I've completely run out of money once and things are getting really tight again.
This house is all about Zip and is a labor of love. A little more love just got thrown into the mix.
You guys can't imagine how appreciative and even more humbled we are.
Thank you from T and myself.
Dood, WE'RE family . . .
I've learnt this in the years I've been a DMFer . . .
I've learnt that being a DMFer is not only talkng about bikes and the weird weather we have in our "homes" or if one is crazy enough to travel 18+hrs to attend DIMBY and then have to make you wake up at 0300h and drive me to the airport . . .
Maybe one day you will come to know how this came to be, MERRY CHRISTMAS Nate, T & Z [beer]
You just got DMF'ed

Chestnut is just the color.
It's composite decking. All the real wood (Merbau) is going inside.

The materials in the old house will be reclaimed.
There are people that pay good money for old tired building materials.
That, and it's illegal to burn a building... [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] unless you're a FD...and I wouldn't trust my FD with a camp fire. ;)

also a no-no.
As much as I like a good fire...
I can use the money.

i think it's fantastic that the old house's materials will be reclaimed... there is a lot of nice wood trim in there [thumbsup] and some extra moolah is nice too

I'm sure they would put in the extra work [thumbsup] That's true DMF spirit - pulling together.
We'll just have to raise funds to match what the old material is worth.
DP: we just need to classify the materials from 'building' to 'fire'

Rough sawn sheathing boards bring as much as $6/lineal foot.
The old pine flooring
could be worth twice that.
Not sure how many feet of everything can be salvaged, but it will be quite a pile.
It just seems wrong to put it in a dumpster or into smoke.
All I hear is excuses [roll]
Make an estimate and start a donation [beer]
There's a substantial market in reclaimed timber alright.
There are companies that will inspect the building, buy the material up front and send a crew to remove it.
The used market endows some new homes with beautiful timber features that you otherwise don't see much nowdays.

I plan on exploring that option too.
This place is not post and beam so that somewhat reduces the 'draw'.
fwiw...i would like to buy a small old house memento.
as an "been there, drank there, friends lived there" kinda dohicky.
like a door knob or such.
;D
Reclaiming the good stuff from the old house is a great idea, and might be worth a nice pile of cash. People pay quite a bit of money for the right stuff. We have a lot of old, unused barns in the area and you'd be surprised what people pay for the old gray barn wood.

You could auction off the screen door!

Nate's already spoken for. [laugh] I crack me up.
Seriously though, Nate...did you honestly expect anything less than some ridiculous house warming gift from this bunch? Just be glad I told them no way on the strippers and pole. I figured T might not be as happy about that as she would something you all could enjoy. [cheeky]

Joel,
If you want the freezer, and Nate will let it go,.....I will bring it to you. [thumbsup]
assuming i can get past the CA bug stations with it :P
naaaaa...something architectural
Good choice BP. [thumbsup]
I don't think you could transport the freezer across state lines without some sort of nuclear meter going off and alerting everyone. Has the freezer been welded shut yet? It's not a bad idea.
Seriously now, Nate, T and Z, I hope you enjoy that deck for many years to come! And let me know when you're ready to install it, an extra set of hands makes decking easier.
Have you decided on how to fasten the boards down?

I had thought to suggest a vodka still set-up, but I wasn't sure that T and Z would get much enjoyment in the short term from it.
I think I need to inspect this deck, as long as the inspection period does not coincide with Speedweek.
