Recently re-subscribed, but I'm having flashbacks of why I stopped....
Lappy PC with Win7, Firefox 26.0, Silverlight 5.1.20913.0
2.2 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM.
C-drive has 37 GB free.
With Firefox browser open, it'll be under 10% CPU activity, and 1.1 GB memory in use.
Open a Netflix tab, click on a movie, and it will stream fine.
CPU activity will settle down to ~50% while streaming, with 1.2 GB memory in use.
While streaming, if I try to move forward or backward, it will start buffering, but CPU activity will go 100% and it won't finish.
Internet chat on the netflix helpline ended with them suggesting that I back up all my files and re-format the hard-drive.
I'm not happy with that proposed solution.
Oh, I've got a weekly defragment set, and I re-checked all drives, 0% fragmented.
Never had an issue with it
Not sure why you guys keep paying for Netflix.......... XBMC has every thing you want need or even thought about
Including all MotoGP and WSBK , IOMTT
every PPV event
Every movie
live TV
Every TV series ever made

I've been seeing the same issue with IE. I switched to Chrome and had much better luck, though it hasn't been perfect.

Not aware of this websites. I just always assume they are ridden with malware, spyware and so on. How's you experience?
Honestly it is life changing !!
I have not paid for cable / satellite in years
As an example I watched the UFC fight the other night
Capt Phillips in HD
Saving Mr Banks in HD last night
All for free ( I use a Raspberry Pi ) but any laptop with HDMI will work
SD
Try installing the latest ver of FF and update all addons(silverlite, flash etc..). In FF advanced options uncheck "use advanced hardware acceleration".

During installation of XMBC If you DECLINE the installation of all third party softwares you'll be good.s
happy new year guys [wine]
Ok, I guess I'll say it. It's free (e.g. In the case of 'saving
Mr banks') in the sense of 'i stole it so it didn't cost me
Anything'.

~~~SNIP~~~
Thanks!
I tried that, it's still locking up in NetFlix when stepping forward or back.
It apppears that Shockwave Flash is getting into a fistfight with something, as I'll get a script warning.
Isn't using these "free" methods theft?
Theft is theft, but let the rationalization commence ;)
seriously...Yes its free
Just watched American Hustle DVD quality
Theft ..I would not call it theft it is all available on line....... XBMC just puts it at your finger tips ..and the way the entertainment industry rips us off ..think of it as a equalizer
If you guys want to keep paying cable / satellite / netflix ..go ahead
SD
try an older ver of flash.
flash/firefox knowledge base articles that might help.
Quotehttp://kb.mozillazine.org/Macromedia_Flash
Shouldn't be a Flash issue though, since NF uses Silverlight or HTML 5
You can check your Playback settings under your account profile. Try changing it to Auto or a lower quality setting, and/or try toggling between HTML 5 and Silverlight.
agreed, but he's getting errors related to flash.
SD
if you right click on the movie you should get a silverlite tab to appear. double click that and goto playback tab and uncheck hardware acceleration.
Did you give Chrome a try?
I tried Chrome last night, it works just as well as FF but still the same lockup on step forward/back in the video.
I've been running without hardware acceleration for a couple days, no impact on playback quality, but I still have the lockup.
Toggled to HTML5, no love there, still locks up.
I'll experiment more, thanks for the help scaramanga and Deviant. [beer]
Let's keep this to helping Nick solve his issues with a paid subscription service...
K?
agreed
I just bought a new blu-ray player ($70) because I gave my old one away. In addition to playing DVDs, it has Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon Prime Streaming, NBA league pass, Vudu, and almost 100 other apps/programs. Obviously, each one is a paid service that I can elect to have or not, but I use it for Netflix and a few others and it's great without any worries about CPU speed, etc. Plus, I watch on my TV (42") rather than my laptop (13").
Anyway, if you're set on Netflix and not bound to your computer, I recommend it or something similar device (roku, appleTV, etc.). Just a thought that may avoid the issues you're facing. Obviously, an investment is involved, but worth it in my experience.
you can use the following (in windowed mode, not full-screen) to access diagnostic information from the steam/player:
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+M â€" Menu; includes loading custom .dfxp sub-title files.
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+C â€" Codes; frame rate plus other (unknown to me) info. Also makes the other overlays green.
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+D â€" Display A/V Stats on-screen
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L â€" Logging window
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+P â€" Player info
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+R â€" toggle color Rotation for overlays in Chrome; probably a debugging feature.
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S â€" current Streaming bit-rate and manual bit-rate selection
$99
Works great plus there is other free and pay content available on the device.
Is that Chrome only, or FF only, or any browser?
for the netflix browser app.
No idea.
The "Nuke From Orbit" solution seemed overly drastic.
I'm running out of bullets.
Try starting FF in Safe Mode and see if that works any better:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
If you're on wi-fi, try it plugged in/cabled. If you haven't rebooted your modem/router/firewall in a while, give it/them a bounce by shutting down and pulling the power for a bit, then reconnecting in proper order.
If you're using wired, check the NIC (ethernet adapter) properties and disable the power saving mode.
If you're using wi-fi, check the wireless adapter and try maxing out the power settings.
Try streaming on another good wi-fi network (campus, bookstore, friends house, etc.) and see if it works better or worse.
Finally, if Flash is still being a booger, they have an uninstaller that does better clean-up than the standard Add-Remove Programs manuever. You do have to search for it for a bit though...
Good luck.
its on that link i posted
note: netflix doesn't use flash, it uses microsoft silverlight.
i'd recommend looking for steaming info and/or log messages (using the key-combos above) while scrubbing a video to see if that sheds any more light on the issue.
