I've been reading a thread for quite some time now, awaiting updates eagerly.
http://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-294/4-rotor-fc-build-974831/ (http://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-294/4-rotor-fc-build-974831/)
Which inspired me to search for videos on youtube.
Mazda Rx8 4 rotors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxAfpiNlxBA#)
and
4 Rotor Mazda RX-8 Time Attack Car Revving Engine At Seven Stock 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttyN6X375u8#)
These things sound way bad ass and 2 strokey. If you have not seen this thread, and you love cars and engines, you're missing out.
My question is: are these 3 and 4 rotor builds always custom or are there kits available? For as much work as the guy in that first link I posted has gone to, I can't imagine many would follow in his footsteps. That leads me to think there are kits, or some easier way to produce these fire breathing monsters.
I want one

That still wouldn't mask the sound :D
Hood, hubcaps and maybe a truck sized muffler.
It still would be tough silencing that banshee wail.
It would also be a crime.
Against the engine gods.

That's true.
The lack of emblems on my '69 Mustang 428 fastback didn't mask the smoke left at intersections either. [evil]
Its what intersections and tunnels are for :D
can someone fit a 3-rotor into my 280Z? That would be fun!
JM
I think it would be cake to put a 3-4-6 rotor into most anything.

mazda used to offer the cosmo with a 3-rotor configuration (20B) in the early 90s, but i think most of those have dried up.
there are stateside companies filling the gap with the 3+ rotor crankshafts and housing kits.
Just 3?
didnt you get rotors in the states ???
youtube pac performance , been around for 20+ years , 7 sec quarters in rx3's are scary shit
suzuki made a rotary bike back in the day
Suzuki had the RE5, and there was another rotory powered bike too, maybe a Guzzi?

I gotta come back to this thread when I can get somewhere where I can watch video. Probably at my home computer where I have the Bose linked via bluetooth.

I'm sure it could be done. There's a video on YouTube of a 4 rotor rx7 build that would give you an idea as to how long the housings are. I doubt it's much longer than the I6 block in a datsun. 4 rotor builds though are crazy expensive.
I, on the other hand have been craving a datsun 280 to put an rb26dett (r34 skyline engine) into.
Here's the video.

Ah some one posted this a while back.. thanks for derby.. can't wait to see the finished product. .

here's a (canadian) company that offers both 3 and 4 rotor kits:

defined autoworks (ohio... builder of the car in the video above), also offers 3 and 4 rotor kits:

...and here's a 6-rotor rx-4:

funny thing is, i *almost* didn't post that link. i did a quick look for 5- and 6-rotor examples and that one just popped up.
...in other news, i really need to stop looking at rx-7s.
It certainly would cost me less :)

Yea, my car is only worth about $2K on a good day...
JM
So... the deal with rotaries...
3-rotors use the FD housings with a special eccentric shaft. 4-rotors use an unobtanium 2-piece eccentric shaft. The reason it sounds like an F1 car having sex with the god of war? each rotor is 3 cylinders... with peripheral ports...
Ducs are cheaper, trust me. LSR Ducs are cheaper, trust me. Billet crankshafts and custom engine work for Ducs are cheaper than 3+ rotor Mazda parts... Everything else rotary takes a specific skill set, and will not be street legal in anything newer than 25 years old.

Why?
Because peripheral ports can't pass smog. Too much overlap in the port timing. Long flame fronts require funky ignition timing. Even stock motors have trouble passing smog tests.
I'm sure you can build the bits and you can learn the idiosyncrasies if you want. It's just an expensive road to go down.
I think the biggest problem is the ever-dwindling supply of rotor housings since the advent of the MSPRE in the RX-8.
No smog here ;)
Those are really cool vids Kevin. [thumbsup]
We need to figure out a way to refit one of those 4 rotor setups into my 3000gt. :o
I've got a transmission ( manual) to donate too that project... the two of you can probably build the whole thing from scratch.
build one and I'll see how many people I can piss off at a car show but putting it in my Chevelle [laugh]

but that wouldn't really offend anyone, an iconic car would need the treatment.
Mid 70's Corvettes are cheap and the fan base strong.
Oh I see what you're getting at.
I just like the Fairmont's because they're grandma cars. Nobody expects anything out of them.
