Title: Post Wreck Repair and Mods
Post by: JoshuaCJCohen on January 12, 2014, 06:58:19 AM
Hi all,
Dumped my M900 Dark a week ago.

Hit something with the front brake lever and my shoulder.  I small tree or branch I think.  Broke the mounting portion of the lever.  I assume I can't buy a replacement and just need to buy a whole new lever.  Can someone please confirm?

Snapped the Left Peg Holder Plate clean off.  Exhaust was disconnected at the mouth but still screwed to the Plate.  Whole thing was attached by the gearbox transmission rod.  Gearchange lever is bent to the right 90 degrees so it is pointing up instead of to the left.  I read somewhere bending it back wont be an option.  Two items in the foreground are the screw to attach the rod and the spring/plate for the side stand.  Front of exhaust is crushed in a bit.

Can someone tell me how to get the glass off the tachometer?  Both of the screws that hold the face in place have rattled lose and are rolling around in the bottom.  The tach face is moving back and forth and is almost unreadable at times.  One screw was out before the wreck, the other fell out when I drove it home.

I also lost the thin metal rectangle from the gas tank hook.  Can anyone tell me if that is a steel rod or aluminum and what the dimensions might be?

Beer tray snapped at the left indicator.  I wanted to get an integrated tail/flasher light and pull the wings off anyway.

Parts list:
Handlebar                            360.1.023.1B
Front Brake Lever            CnR replacement

RH Foot Peg Holder Plate    824.1.024.1A
RH Silencer                    573.1.050.1A
RH Bracket                            576.1.021.1A
RH Foot-Rest                    464.1.017.1A

LH Foot Peg Holder Plate    824.1.023.1A
LH Silencer                    574.1.050.1A
LH Bracket                            576.1.022.1A
Rubber Pad                    764.1.001.1A
Bush                                    711.1.090.1A
LH Foot-Rest                    464.1.018.1A
Gearchange Lever            456.2.009.1A

From looking around handlebars are easy to find.  Ditto for the new tail light.  When I replace the tail light and remove the tail turn signals is there anything I can do with the beer tray to make it look less crappy?  I'd rather not have the holes from the signals exposed and looking half-ass if I can avoid it.

The bike is either 2000 or 2001.  The holder plates are ate up anyway and I'm going to replace them both.  I haven't found an aftermarket set available yet, only ones that seem to be scaled down and not for mounting the exhaust.  Is there a company out there that makes alternatives or am I stuck ordering OEM?  I wouldn't be opposed to something powder coated black.

All four pegs need to be replaced.  One of the left side rubber pads has the outer flange torn off.  I don't think it is a critical vib absorber so I didn't plan on replacing it, mostly because getting parts here in Okinawa is going to be a time suck.  If the dealer has one available I'll buy it.

The parts catalog has a piece called a "bush" that appears to be inside where the muffler connects to the exhaust system.  I didn't see it during my parts search at the crash site.  Is this a critical piece or can I do without it?

I'm trying to buy some exhaust and hangers on the parts for sale forum.

More detailed pictures are below.

Since I cracked the headlight fairing I didn't plan on replacing it.  I like the stripped down look better.  I would appreciate suggestions for other mods or upgrades.  High on the list is getting rid of the pee cup reservoirs.

Thanks and have a good night,
Josh

Sorry to hear about your crash.

That post was a complicated read, but let's see...

1. Brake lever. Replace!
2. Reservoirs. Our sponsors will have blingy alternatives.
3. Tacho. Some model years are hard/impossible to open, but wait for educated answers.
4. Gas tank hook. I don't know, but someone will.
5. Beer tray mod. Chop the tail and install new license plate holder - or http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=15393.30 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=15393.30)
6. Handle bar. Sponsors or ebay.
7. Complete footpeg assemblies. Ebay
8. Exhaust bush? No bush there (?)

Did that cover all the items?
Those are not your only options, but somewhere to start [thumbsup]

I know the post was long.  I wanted to get it all on instead of coming back with 7 different topics.

I'd rather not chop the tail.  While I don't normally ride in the rain I do ride when the road is wet because of the weather here on Okinawa.  I was hoping there was a replacement tray or a way to clean up the sides if I remove the indicators.  Surely someone has transitioned to an all in one integrated light from the three light system.  I do want to shorten up the license plate holder as well and I found a good threat complete with .pdf of a new plate holder.

I think I'm going to loosen and remove the other exhaust and see if I can find the mysterious bush.

Ordered handlebar and tail light from MonsterParts last night.  Thanks for the footpeg assembly tips!

I used to have that brake light w/ integrated signals...very good i think.

I have seen others have a shorter carbon beer-tray a google search found these examples:

You can get a carbon fiber tray.. I might still have my plastic one, but 90% sure I had sold it. I will check tonight though.

I just shipped out your handlebar and taillight :)

I believe you can get just the adapter piece for the lever.

Which adapter for lever do you mean? Brake lever or gearshift lever? Thanks.

she meant for your front brake lever....

the black piece that still attached to your brembo gold master cylinder, you can get just that piece only to replace it.  contact CRG maybe...

I got hold of PSR-USA and they are sending me the adapter.  They call it a perch.  $26.  Very pleased.

I've been doing a lot of research on beer tray replacement.  I found this one on ebay.

but I don't know if it will fit my bike.  Below are a couple of pictures of my tail end.  What do you guys think?

Thanks.

Look at yours.  Some are 3 bolt, some 4.

Howie,
3/4 bolts where?  I've got two bolts up near the tail light and three bolts underneath.  Do the under bolts screw into the tray from the bottom?  I'll go take my tray apart and see what it looks like.

Thanks,
J

I was back in the states for about a month and returned to Japan about a week ago.  Picked up some parts while there so I didn't have to wait for them to be shipped and maybe lost.  Below are pics of the finished product.  New handlebar, reservoirs, and choke control.  Removed the tach, cut it open, reinstalled the screws with locktite, poxy'd the tack back together and reinstalled it.  New left side peg holder, had them both powder coated so they matched, along with the shifter, rear brake lever, shift rod and bolts. Replaced the mufflers as the left one was damaged beyond use.  New carbon fiber tail and integrated tail light with self-made brackets for the light and license plate.

Currently having a wire problem with the front brake lever.  When activated it doesn't brighten the rear light.  I'll start trouble shooting that this week.  Lastly, does anyone have an OEM left side rider's foot peg?  The straight gray metal one?  The ones that came with the new left side holder have a rubber overcoat on them and they don't match the original right side ones.  I have the old left side passenger peg but lost the driver's side in the wreck.

Thanks for all the advice and help putting her back together!

Take care,
Josh

I assume you mean the brake light does not come on when the brake lever is pressed?  Does the taillight come on when the ignition is turned on?  If yes, you may have a faulty brake switch - attached with two small screws to the lever.  I've had to replace this twice on my '97 M900.  But first, I would check fuses and then taillight bulb - it is a dual filament and one may be broke.

He probably just lost the tiny little eraser head/plastic thingy that everyone loses when they change brake levers. 99 cents from the dealer or you can just make one from an eraser head.

The tail light works fine.  It gets bright when the rear brake lever is depressed.  The front brake level worked two days prior to my last post.  I moved it from my house to another location to work on the tail and muffler.  Before I moved it I checked rear brake, front brake, and indicators.  All good.  However, when I arrived at my destination I checked them again and the front lever didn't activate the light anymore.

I had to get rid of the OEM front brake level activation system last year when I did my Japanese Conditional Inspection (JCI - bi-annual road safety inspection).  The front brake lever wasn't turning on the light so I took it to the shop. They took off the eraser system and put on a pressure system that is screwed directly into the master cyclinder. It has two wires that come off it and plug in down near the forks.  When I was moving stuff around I had to mangle one pretty badly to get it back in and I think I might have damaged the connectors.  I don't have crimpers so either need to get some or just take it to the shop and see if they will pull the metal connector off and put it back on, restting it.

Thanks for the advice and I'll let you know how it goes.

First check those cheesy connectors that connect the switch to the harness, they may be loose or dirty.  Still doesn't work?  Disconnect the switch.  With the key on touch the two connectors together that go to the rear of the bike.  Brake light lights?  Bad switch.
