Title: Winter Olympics (possible spoilers)
Post by: ItsaDuc on February 07, 2014, 07:40:14 PM
What? No thread for this yet? Where is your patriotism?

I love the games. Winter is my favorite. Cant wait for the Mens Hockey to start up. Mens Downhill is also a fav.

Its going to be tough to watch some of the events with the time change, thank God for DVR's.

All politics aside, I hope for the Russians to get things straight and are ready for the events and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, I hope for no issues with what has been reported in the news the last few weeks with terrorist threats. This is not the time, not that there ever is one.

Glad there's a thread, dont need the patriotism.  I see no reason why Russia wont do a great job  [thumbsup]

+1  But then again, I love it all.

Its for the misguided "love of god" that most of that shit occurs.

So I agree, lets leave god and politics out and...

let the games begin  [thumbsup]

Some locals I'm rooting for:  Alex Diebold - Snowboardcross (I used to work with his Dad, Doug)
Kelley Clark - best female snowboarder, from Dover VT (Mt.Snow)
Lindsey Jacobellis - Snowboardcross - A beautiful goddess & rides Stratton sometimes
Jackie Hernandez - Snowboardcross - Londonderry VT (neighboring town of mine)
Devin Logan - Freestyle skier (Mt.Snow)
Sophie Caldwell - X-Country (Stratton MTN. School, her dad is the school head coach)
Hannah Teeter - snowboarder - Belmont VT (rides Stratton a lot)

Best of luck to all the US athletes and best wishes for an injury/terrorist free Olympic games for all.   [thumbsup] [clap] [beer] [popcorn]

watching our canuck hockey  ladies dominate switzerland as we speak  ;D
Nice to see the refs letting them play rougher than normal.
Gotta wait till thursday to watch our men kick butt. Happy to see Martin St Louis join the team.
There is something about the winter olympics that make it more emotional than the summer , maybe its me.
Go Canada  [clap]
Lets all pray nobody gets hurt. The memory of that Georgian luger hitting that metal poll in vancouver and instantly losing his life still makes the hair on arms raise. :'(

Controversy in Ice Dance

French magazine L'Equipe alleges the U.S. and Russia have struck a deal to help each other out at Sochi Winter Olympic figure skating events, which would keep Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir from the gold.
The magazine quotes a Russian coach, who spoke to the magazine on the condition of anonymity about the "proposed barter" between the two countries.
According to the magazine, the anonymous official said the U.S. has agreed to help Russia win the pairs figure skating and team events.
In exchange, Russia would purportedly ensure Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the U.S. win gold over Canadian champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
But Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada's high performance director, says he's confident the judging will be fair.
"I stay clear of that stuff," he said. "I have full confidence that [when] the skaters go out and do their job, they will do their job on the ice, [and] the judges will judge it as they see it."
This is not the first judging controversy to hit the Olympics.
In 2002, Canadian figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier placed second behind Russian pair Yelene Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, despite a stumble during the Russians` performance.
A French judge later admitted she planned to vote for the Russians regardless of how they performed.
Sale and Pelletier, who initially took home silver, were eventually awarded a second gold medal in the event.
The sport's entire scoring system was overhauled on the heels of the scandal. The old 6.0 scoring system was replaced in 2004 to make the scoring more objective.

I thought it was odd that such a high number of athletes they highlighted during the walk in, no matter the Country, lives and trains in the USA. I also have a problem with the athletes that have lived in the USA their whole life competing for other Countries. I guess it's easier to make the team when you are competing against a dozen of the best instead of hundreds of the best.

Pretty sure they already do with a world cup in each discipline, but olympics just get the most TV coverage and prestige.

Well... it depends who you are asking. Many of the athletes don't consider the Olympics to be the most important competition they enter.

What exactly do they do in that case?

Do they have spare medals on hand?

After the games, what do they do with the extra medals that aren't used?

Shani Davis looked like he just didn't give 2 shits. Either he hurt himself and backed off or just said eff it after the first lap of the 1000m. Of course, with the Dutch picking up 12 speedskating medals so far, I would be seriously disenchanted too...

In this case two gold medals and one bronze were awarded. No silver.
There have been other medals tied in the Olympics. IIRC there was a tie for silver at Nagano in one of the mens skiing events (forget which one).

Rameses is asking logistically what do they do. Presumably they only bring a gold, silver, and bronze medal for each sport...or do they bring spares to cover ties? And if they do, what happens to the unused ones?

Making up 25 seconds on the last leg of the relay!  WOW..   I remember in the Vancouver Olympics, I think it was a Slovenian gal in the cross country sprints fell down an embankment during warmup, and skied all four of her races and took sliver with a punctured lung and broken ribs.  TOUGH!!!!!!!

I skied a couple biathlon matches - I remember telling the referee that if anyone found a lung out on the course, it was probably mine.
