Title: 4 pad 65mm OE calipers from 749/999: worthwhile upgrade and an easy fit?
Post by: Rudemouthsky on March 21, 2014, 06:20:37 PM
Not a ton of info about this mod, especially in regards to Monsters. Besides the worthiness of this upgrade I am mainly wondering if they will bolt up to the 65mm mounts on Monster forks with no hassles? I think a 4 pad setup would go nicely with my new 19RCS master. Not to mention the silver will look great on my bike.

Thanks.

Plenty of power on both the '999' style and the '996' style, but because of the four pads you get four leading edges = more agressive initial bite. Initial bite can be positive, but also requires better skills and awareness.

The position of the banjo bolts are different, so you'd need new lines  8)

Yep, fancy new Spiegler lines are on my shopping list anyway! good news.

I know on my original calipers they have a line with a 90 degree fitting and from looking at my 4pad, it needs a straight fitting.

Thanks for the info. Chris from Cycle Cat should be able to configure something I'd imagine. It'll def be a custom setup. I haven't even picked out the rotors yet though.

[roll] [laugh]  I am man enough to admit that was a consideration when I put the these calipers on my S2R.

With the little baby (two piston) brakes on the S2R they have an adapter bracket which connects the calipers to the 65mm fork mounts - the adapter bracket came off with the calipers and the new calipers bolted straight up to the fork mounts (of course the rotors also needed to be changed on the S2R from the 300 to 320 with a different offset ... but that only applies if you are changing from the wee-rotors as well).

Yes I needed new lines as well (went with Fren Tubo in my case) because the required fittings were different. Apparently the aftermarket lines use a less expansive liner which improves braking performance ... I'd never know if this is simply marketing hype.

I changed the master cylinders later (staged due to self-imposed cost constraints) but stuck with a conventional style (slightly larger diameter, removed the coffins).

Braking performance is obviously greatly improved over the stock S2R setup ... but interestingly I have much stronger braking on the Monster compared to my 999. The 999 has the same calipers but the stock radial masters (which in theory should be better). I honestly couldn't tell you the reason why ... I could theorise with my limited knowledge, but that won't help you too much.

Perhaps the brake lines do make a difference, the 999 has never been bled perfectly, the brake pad material is different or something else I have no comprehension of ... but, the Monster with the custom lines and 4-pad calipers is not short of braking power as far as I am concerned.

Hope that helps a little.

Yes it does, thank you. Especially since I am also considering the black 4 piston/2 pad S2R1000 calipers. I wonder if they require a bracket as well or if it's only the baby S2R with the coffins and smaller discs...

I don't mind at all admitting that the color matters to me. I'm building the bike from scratch so I may as well have what I like. The gold Brembo's just look crappy espec when they're dirty imo.

It is odd to hear you say that about the braking comparison between your Monster and 999. I have read multiple times that the 18mm OE radial pump from the 999 was one of the best braking upgrade one could achieve short of the RCS's.

The S2R1000 calipers bolt straight on - no brackets, but aren't those what you have now? (except for the color)

Quality of the fluid, quality of bleed work, type of pad material, condition of lines, professional adjustments, type and quality of discs, calipers and masters ALL play important roles. The result depends on all of this AND how well they work together AND how well they are suited for what you need.

I can tell you that with all dialled in the S2R1000/'996' calipers are capable of 140mph two finger stoppies while maintaining control - on both 16mm coffin and modern radial calipers.

My message is that, except for the S2R800, 695 and some 620 systems, most Ducati brakes are working well when serviced and taken care of - or modified if so required.

Mine are the 2 piston Brembos
