Title: Frame Plugs
Post by: StephenC on March 28, 2014, 01:17:51 AM
What are frame plugs for?  Are they just aesthetic?  I got some on the bike I recently bought and am wondering if they should be coming off.  Certainly the holes in the frame never offended me so, unless they have some actual function, they just add weight!

Comments welcome.

 They reduce the air turbulence!

Although they add to the bike's net weight, they can be fine tuned to dampen harmonic resonance. This is a bonus for those shallow enough to install them for their bling factor.....such as myself.  ;)

Is that why red bikes go faster?

Nope. That is merely an aspirational delusion resulting from a sinusoidal phase-shifted illusion suffered by red bike owners. On the other hand, black bikes always lead.  ;D

Unfortunately, this is an affliction that black bike owners suffer from.
They unknowingly project their delusion onto red bike owners.

The incontrovertible truth is revealed by racing Ducatis, as all can see that the fastest Ducatis are red.

Oh, some of the usual meaningless banter.  [cheeky]

IMHO, frame plugs are purely an aesthetic mod.

Haven't heard of a convincing technical reason to use them.

Now I'm confused!  What you are all trying to say is that my red and black bike is the fastest possible combination and is only being held back by the frame plugs that bobspapa wants me to take off so he can give them to his lady friend?

This seems to be a reasonable conclusion to draw ... but I may as well throw in my observations based on our Ducatis.

My black one is faster than my red one, my wife's titanium one is faster than my black one but not as fast as her yellow one.

So I think Rule62 is right (even though I didn't understand what was being said) ... yellow appears to be the fastest colour.

Frame plugs stop Wind induced vibrations of the frame around the plug holes. You see, as a kid you may have tried blowing air over the top of a bottle and witnessed a sound. This sound vibrates the bottle. Now imagine this at speeds over 225mph! The vibration can be so powerful that you can have micro stress fractures at the frame. This can cause stress at the engine mounts.

Back in the old WSBK days when they didn't know about this phenomenon, there was a crazy crash where a motor dropped out of the frame on the straight away (those high speeds!) and caused a pile up of bikes. Everyone lived except for a unicorn that just so happened to be on track when the engine dropped out.

Which is a pity as it was the last one left... that could ride a superbike

Kind of an obscure throw-back phrase, used only for nonsense.  :)

Dilemma solved. After fiddling with them I must have not tightened one enough. It's now MIA, so off comes the other one to match. That'll be a good 60g weight saved!
