The copper/bronze colored retaining clip at the bottom that holds the trim ring in place with a single screw...yeah I lost that. Scoured BMW parts fiches for hours with no luck. Ducati as many of you know requires you to buy a whole new headlight assembly for $500. Yeah right. [laugh]
Thanks for the suggestions..

Try on e-bay you should find a second handed head light for much less!!!!
its to stop the square nut turning, so bend and drill some metal into a squarish U shape that holds the nut snug. maybe squash and grind a washer too.
I might have one, I'll look later.

I might have one as well.
All of you rule.
figured out that it's called a captive nut or a caged nut from Koko's post somehow on my first Google search. Can't even remember the string I used.
Chris and Howie, a good photo of the part should be sufficient...thanks guys.

I really gotta knock off this bad habit of hastily taking shit apart without carefully noting how it goes back together, then "setting it down". Or I'm going to have a really bad time trying to put a bike together...
When I tore mine down I just had a small digital camera sitting next to all my tools. Took pictures as it all came apart and labeled small zip-loc bags of parts.

Smart.
My brother and I once had a convo about why we were not at all mechanically inclined. Our theory is that it's because our Dad wasn't. I think that's where most people who are good wrenches get their good habits and confidence from.
So, do you need it? If so, send me your address.

sorry for laughing, but, you sound a lot like me; somehow, I put back all parts back on . . . Well, now I do have help for OEM manuals . . .

I did the same, as I am not overly mechanically inclined. Even with everything bagged, tagged and photographed, I had some adventures in re-assembly
Got the piece Howie sent me yesterday. Howie is awesome. [thumbsup]
