Title: Bringing back to life one haggered 620 (Warning tons-o-pics)
Post by: dark_duc on May 05, 2014, 11:35:10 AM
So I have a friend that asked me to help him find a 620 a couple years back and ended up finding him a pretty nice 2005 dark.  It had a fueling issue, no red key, and a salvaged title due to a low speed drop.  I negotiated the guy down to $1700 and fixed the fuel pump for him.  Since then the kid has wrecked it two more times (low side slides thank goodness) which has left pretty much everything damaged with the exception of the motor and frame.  Its been sitting in his side yard for the last 6 months and I couldn't take it anymore.  I offered him $500 and brought it home.  I intended to fix and flip but my wife called dibs so now I plan to get it back in tip top shape for her.

At a distance it doesn't look half bad but looking a little closer...

Tank expanded and damaged

...and I don't think the chain was ever adjusted or lubed

(http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r212/moore_clan/20140504_095804_resized_zps90e1d063.jpg) (http://s145.photobucket.com/user/moore_clan/media/20140504_095804_resized_zps90e1d063.jpg.html)

This a few hours after unloading.  Thankfully the frame, triples, swing arm, and engine look fine.  The engine fired right up.

(http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r212/moore_clan/20140504_180835_resized_zps24ab89fb.jpg) (http://s145.photobucket.com/user/moore_clan/media/20140504_180835_resized_zps24ab89fb.jpg.html)

Now, the good news is, I already had or have coming the following in perfect shape:

*  Tank
*  Front fender
*  Seat
*  Exhaust cans
*  Bars
*  Mirrors
*  Levers

Now I am just looking for some of the other bits and pieces.  If you have stock parts that have been removed and are just cluttering up your shop, please peek over at the parts wanted section, maybe you have something I need.  I hope to have everything I am looking for posted up by tonight.   I will update as I make progress but I hope to see the wife on it by June/July!

$500 seems like a great deal! None of that damage seems too bad to me. Have fun...I've been contemplating doing the same thing if I can find the right 620.

Buck Naked:  Sweet!  Any help on parts would be appreciated!  Yes, gonna chop the tail and go integrated light.  Got me the fender hangars and probably forks (waiting on shipping quote from Panama) although the Showas may be the ticket!

bobspapa:  I stand corrected  ;)

Looking forward to hear the updates as well. My 620m at 52k is kind of slowly dying in the sense the engine isn't purring like the early days. Good to see your resurrection story....

Mine is just over 5K (previous owner never rode it)

Glad to know she's got a long life ahead of her.

Just a word, I don't know what your wife prefers, if torque of the line or speed down the line or basically around town riding . . .

Some would prefer to add to the rear sprocket while most go to 14 on the front sprocket . . . I am riding a 14/48, top speed is gone, but, around town, great . . . 15/48 was OK but, I was working 2nd-3rd way to much for nothing around the city, now, is just 3rd . . . check this out, http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/jtchain/hbund/jtchain.html (http://www.monsterparts.com/pc/jtchain/hbund/jtchain.html)

Ha Ha!  Funny you should show that.  I ordered a pile of parts from Jeff on Monday to include that sprocket combo (they should be here tomorrow).  I also got the tail chop package   ;D

As far as teeth I went with what I like on mine, 14/48 as well  [thumbsup]

A box of Monster Parts goodness was on my front door when I got home from work!

This weekend I plan to chop the tail, install the MotoDynamics integrated tail light, install sprockets and chain, dye the sprocket and belt covers, de-sticker the frame, and do some deep cleaning.

Oh and I'm sure a couple beers will be consumed during all this....I better hold off prior to cutting the frame though.  [drink]

and a new OEM front axle from my local dealer:

Last weekend I had sanded out all the road rash on the front rim and repainted.  It's now at the shop getting a new Pilot Power 3 mounted.

Since I am a week or two out on the forks, I think I am gonna chop, core, and paint the cans.  I'll post up the progress.

What did the axle set you back? That's the main reason I tore my bike down, for the axles...eBay scrappers were gougin' and $hit. Tired of that mob of Imperial Sport bikes and their buddies Gotham Cycles and Rubbersideup.

The "Parts and Supplies" guy I hate the most. He has the filthiest parts and all priced higher than brand new OEM. I sent him hate mail for selling scabby caliper pinch bolts for $60 and he blocked me, lol.

Lol!  Yea I hear ya on the used parts.  The new front was $83.  A bit steep but not a part I wanted to gamble with on ebay.

That's not bad at all. I think mine was priced well over $100 but I need to check other years as they have different numbers/different prices for what is the same part.

...and because I am impatient, I threw on the tank and seat.  I also got the new bars and throttle installed.  Waiting on my ebay high beam switch.

Sound clip of the cored pipes.  I like them as much or more than the TBR's on my other 620!  (Yes, I know my idle is low)

I thought you had asked me for wallpaper and that's what I sent ;D  Beleive it or not, I left that particular Post Office, without stamps that day . ..  all were used in you package, the package to koko64, a package for Guatemala, another one for Ecuador and one for Mexico . . . All OEM parts from my bike . .. still have a box that needs to be resent to Reseda, CA . . . I sent it to myself to my US address . . .

Enjoy them . . . The oil inside of them is Shell 10W, since the OEM shocks were a bit "mushy" for my 190lbs body, I sort of experimented.

BTW, never use that address . ..  I will never get anything there .., that's a general delivery POBox but never use it . ..

Well, the project is nearing completion!  Installed new bar end mirrors and levers.  Wrapped the forks in vinyl and painted the headlight and brackets.  Took it out for a 40 miles test run and everything felt great.  Now to buzz the suspension down so the wife can give it a spin  :)

Thanks everyone for the help and cheap parts!  It's great to belong to a community that is so willing to help bring back a busted up bike.  My wife LOVES it and said she never know what she saw in cruisers.  I asked her what her favorite thing was and she said by far the handling.  A happy wife makes for a happy life  :)

I'll try and remember to snap a pic on our next ride   [Dolph]
