Title: Still rings
Post by: IZ on June 09, 2014, 01:23:06 PM
Anyone using these for workouts..beside you crossfit fans?

I've been working out on the flying rings and travel rings on Sat/Sun up at Santa Monica/Muscle Beach for the past few months.  Love the weekend workouts but I want to invest in a set of stills when I can't go to SaMo.

Any preferences between the wood or other materials?  Best place to buy?

Also, what other exercises besides muscle ups and levers are you doing?

What's the difference between 'Still' rings and 'Flying' rings? - I just know them as rings.

Regarding exercises if you can adjust the height, one can do just about anything one might do with something like the TRX set up. Push ups, uneven push ups, rows, pikes, pull ups, various ab and core exercises, rotational exercises etc etc etc...

Still rings..2 ring exercises like the iron cross, levers, etc.  What one would see in gymnastic competitions.

Flying rings..big air swings with dislocates, inlocates, Flyaway dismounts.

Travel rings..more than 2 rings..like the sets of 10 in Santa Monica

Gotcha - so I guess all my comments pertain to still rings, since they are indoors and there's no (intentional) swinging.

Like I said, if you can adjust the height, there's an utter ton of things one can do. Pretty much the only area you can't work is the hip->ankle chain like one would use in squats. But you can do hip stabilizer work

Right!  As you know..slow, controlled movement in these.   Right now..working out on stills hanging from rafters at the park for muscle ups, etc.  Haven't done the lower ones for push-ups yet.

Oh - to address one of your original questions. Wood, and grind some chalk into them. Good stable grip, when when sweaty and won't tear you up. The fiber glass or plastic ones get slippy.

That's what I was thinking. The neighbors are metal.  The Santa Monica rings are metal as well but thinner.

By the way..Golds Gym up your way just put in a set of travel rings like the ones at the beach. Fun if you've never used them!

Up my way... there's like 20 golds up my way. I can hardly throw a rock and not hit one...

And no rings for me currently. Docs on Thursday - hard landing on my Elbow during a Rugby match has made my shoulder very unhappy. Real diagnosis is TBD, but seems like rotator cuff. Getting better, but mobility is still restricted and lateral raise can't handle even 5 pounds w/o discomfort.

Yeah, I used to work out at one in FL.  They're everywhere in the East. We have a ton of 24 Hour Fitness in SoCal.

Ordered these wooden rings out of Fringe Sports back in Austin, as well as EZ ring straps.
Thanks for the info Slide!

Looks like a nice set

*Sigh my gym got a bunch of cross fit (that's another story) stuff and has been doing some sessions. So as part of the suite, there's a set of rings... I'm just waiting for this one dude to ruin himself. *sigh
