I think I see what you did there (The make the beast with two backsin' monkey started it!)
From Gerry...figured I'd share. He had more in him than punching mimes.
Pets...
you know there's a story I started to write not long ago...result of a conversation I had with a fellow I met a few years back while living down in the Ga. Mtns...it hit me hard and it is one that has been tough to write
he was a school teacher our age-ish...was born and raised in some redneck parish in Louisiana...his daddy was the county sheriff and local Klansman leader...or as my friend said he was all niggah this, Jew that and Spic/Chink the other thing
anyway he grew up with this hate noise and went to college and became an elementary-ed teacher
the only job opening he could get after graduation was in a black school (1960's no bussing)
his daddy the sheriff would drop him off everyday and pick him up...always going off about the black folks in the neighborhood they drove through and how his son shouldn't bother trying and just put the time in until something opened up in a real school
he was depressed that he was such a failure that he was stuck babysitting black kids...
anyway....
one morning on the way to work his father pointed out two black kids with a mutt on a knotted together rope/leash...said to him look at those sorry little niggers and their ratty dog
the kids were skipping and running proudly along with the dog pulling on the leash...the leash broke and the dog ran ahead of them right out in front of a car and got hit square and killed.......his father laughed
my friend said he watched those two kids bawling and crying trying to go over to see their dog and turning back..afraid to see how busted-up their dog was, who mere seconds before was so full of life spirit and energy.....throwing their hands in the air in helplessness and crying and stamping their feet
he looked at me and said..."Gerry for the first time in my life I saw those kids as humans... they were just like me...they were doing the same exact things I did a few years before when my dog got hit and killed...
I saw and felt their broken hearts...I knew what they were living right there and I learned something important that day..."
So I asked what he got from it...
he just looked at me and smiled and said " I learned that I had a job to do, I was a teacher and was supposed to be teaching those kids because we are all in the same boat together on this earth and we all owe it to each other to make the best of it"
Kind of ironic sometimes how sorrowful things can pave the way to beautiful ones.....
g
I miss reading that mastery he had in observing behaviour.... and eloquently transcribing it to it's very essence.
+1 to all the above.
Anyone remember rats word of the day?
Bushmills tonight.
I don't like it that much (I don't not like it that much either ;)). RAT once suggested I give it a try.
So on this day each year... that's just what I do.
Two years gone. Still missed Gerry, still missed.

See you in the "word" threads.
RIP Gerry.
Thanks for posting. [thumbsup]
Missed indeed
Missed indeed. Crazy how you can moss some oke you've never met. Living in the same state, I was a bit sad I didn't get to meet him first hand.
Miss you, RAT!

Been thinking about Rat all day. Miss him.
Sadly, I remember when I got the unfortunate news while I was on Beale Street in Memphis.
How a guy so many of us never met has had such a profound effect on each of us is beyond me.
[beer] RAT, you were far more than one of a kind!
For you brother
CAROLINA IN MY MIND by Allison Krauss & Jerry Douglas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjGcIhxGP3c#)
So very much missed...
But what a bonus to have "known" just a smidgeon of who he was.
:-\
Was going over our August trip route that will take us near Asheville and had a momentary :'( knowing that I would never have the chance to meet him.
Thanks to Ung for getting all the stories in one thread.
Missed but not forgotten.
Gerry left a fine legacy; but I sure miss "seeing" him here.
I will never think of Ikea or zoo monkeys the same.
Miss your stories and wisdom.
To RAT [drink]
Three years mate.... three years gone.
For Gerry on this day every year I honour his memory with this by now traditional image..

And enjoy his recommendation of Whiskey by Bushmills. It's tough, but I'm happy to raise a glass or three in enduring remembrance of his friendship and wonderful, peerless contributions to this forum.
Cheers mate, miss you still [shot]
And as RAT would often say... "see you in the word boards"
I don't post much, but I've been on the board since 2003. Just wanted to say that I miss him, too. I never met him, but it always was a better day when I saw one of his posts. RIP, Rat.
Somehow, we all missed the date this year.
I was thinking it was closer to the end of the month, as that is when I got the news.
RIP RAT900.
Time to read 'Rat Tales' again.
