Title: Quick Shifters.
Post by: koko64 on August 26, 2014, 02:06:31 PM
Those of you with experience with quick shifters are invited to give the ins and outs of these gadgets. Never used one, and that includes racing.
My interest is in the downshift aspect. I saw a shifter on Yoyodyne's site that worked both ways. Is there a benefit with a speed shifter that would minimize clutch use on the downshift? For someone with an injury that meant they needed to use the clutch as little as possible, say just for stopping and starting, is there a shifter available that can be tuned for the downshift? The latest shifters are quite tuneable for engine cut out time.
Is it possible to get away with clutchless downshifting at street speeds with such a device and maintain some mechanical sympathy?

I mostly haven't used the clutch up or down for many miles on the Duc, and 20k+ miles on the Strom.  I don't have a quick shifter, but I've ridden a BMW with the stock one.  It was a lot smoother than my throttle hand, which probably means tires would last longer.

I can only imagine the downshift would become smoother also.

I'm checking out the Starlane Universal Powershifter at Yoyodyne. It works both ways on upshift and downshift and can be tuned for engine cut out time.
Sounds like a good option.

Both solutions require clutch lever operation on downshifts, I assume. Better than if the rider needs to operate it on both down- and upshifts, but still...

How about the TransLogic plus a foot operated clutch? The new clutch pedal could be on either side - maybe just use the rear brake foot lever...  If the hydraulic system is causing trouble in this new system - probably possible to modify to a cable clutch from the 821 engines (Chris at Desmoworld modified his cable clutch Hyper to a hydraulic clutch)

I found local distributors for both shifters. I will enquire about the downshift issue. Thanks for the link. [thumbsup]
