I would say what ever feels best to your hands. You don't want grips w/ too big of a diameter if you have smaller hands and vice versa. I myself would replace my stock grips w/ a softer grip w/ a larger diameter. I tend to squeeze my grips too hard and I think it's due to the diameter . The grips on my 1098 R especially seem hard and have a small diameter compared to my #1 S4Rs. I wear a size 10 glove.

Another vote for progrips.

But all my offroad riding has ended up with me winding up as a grip whore.  I tear them off and replace them at the slightest show of wear.

I have been running these on my dirtbikes recently and will put em on my monster when I get back stateside they just fit me fine and are a talking point.  http://www.motogrip.net/

If you wish more comfort and wider grips the Grip Puppies are an option.
They slip on outside the stock grips by using soapy water and are very well fastened after a day or two. Mine slid out 1-2 mm during 3-4,000 miles, so you might want to install them a bit further in to begin with. They become wet in the rain, but are easily dried with a piece of paper towel.
Size small is correct for Monsters. Another good thing about these is that the mod is very easy to reverse. Cheap too + free shipping.
