Title: Detroit to Chicago
Post by: roggie on September 01, 2014, 01:53:36 PM
I'll be doing a short trip this weekend with a friend on our motos to Chicago.
Can anyone let me know areas / roads to avoid?
Are there any must see motorcycle shops? Museums?

We are thinking of staying just outside of the city and taking the train in to keep cost down and avoid riding in the city traffic.

Any advice is appreciated!

Avoid Gary, IN. Murder capital of the world. Most of Hammond and South Side is shit too. Skokie + the L is the best way to save $ imo. Nice, safe and clean with lots if good quality affordable hotels and easy access to the heart of Chi. Lots of fantastic Delicatessens in Skokie too (Kauffmans FTW). "Exit" bar on North Ave if you like dive bars, Division St. If you wanna go out and get hammered, catching a game at Wrigley Field if you never have is a must but don't get cheap seats, they really really suck...good luck and have fun.

Motoworks 1901 S. Western is a great Ducati dealer in the city. Johnny Scheff who owns the place is a great guy. If you're in town on Monday the 8th there's Motorcycle Mondays going on at FIVE STAR BAR 1424 W. CHICAGO AVE.. They do a different country first monday of the month. This month is Japanese night (last month was Italian). Moto Mondays are usually a lot of fun and Five Star is a great bar with great food (Duck Ruben!).  Should be a lot of Cafe Bikes there on Japanese night too and the Triumph guys always show up as well as some Ducs.

Make sure you ride up Lake Shore Drive and maybe take a cruise on Lower Wacker Drive (preferably at night).

Next time you're planning a trip to Chicago check the Steel Toe Press Calendar for a good heads up of events (like Bikes and Burlesque  :o)
