Title: Leather, perfed or no??
Post by: Crazy Canadian on July 11, 2008, 11:50:12 PM
Okay, I'm springing for leathers.  I found a great deal on a dainese suit that fits me, but it's not perfed.  I'm in Canada, and we only have 1-2 months where it gets into the 80's and 90's.  It gets pretty cold at nights in the spring and fall and even now in mid summer, it's getting down to 10 C at night (Not sure what that is in F but I would think maybe 45).  Will I be too hot in a solid black suit in the summer?  If I remember the Ducati ride in Ouray last year right, there were plenty of people in leather, but didn't notice if they were perfed or not.  It was hot during the day, cooler in the mountains at night.  Freaking hot day and night east of Denver!  What do y'all think?  Should I run perfed or go solid?  Same top bottom or split it up?

You should be fine.  If you do find yourself overheating, you can just wear a CoolMax suit under it.

I'm just over the border from Vancouver, BC in WA State.  My perfed Icon jacket is never worn w/o the windproof liner.  Most warm days  it's only perfed jacket weather between 11am and 3pm in this part of the country, IMO.  I wouldn't buy perfed leather again.  The use is just too limited.

I hear you.  I'm using a joe rocket jacket now that breaks down into a mesh jacket and I rarely get down to mesh.  When I do, I have the waterproof liner in the back pouch and usually need to use it on the way home.  My buddy uses his mesh JR much more, but he's much bigger than me and has extra built-in insulation. ;)  Plus, he doesn't ride as often because he doesn't like rain or cool days.  Sounds good.  This is too good a deal to pass up then.  Thanks!

You should have a minimum of 5 - 6 jackets/suits in the closet.

During the summer, I have a Dainese Perf - large sections of very small perferations - good airflow, but doesn't let bugs in, like a lot of the Joe Rocket stuff I have seen.

Alpinestars also has some very nice stuff.

Mate, where you're from you shouldn't really need ventilation on too  many days out of the year.

Having said that, if you're worried about it why don't you get a vented suited with a little wiggle room and get an insulated gortex liner? That way you've got the best of both worlds.

I think I paid $100 for my RS Taichi liner and it's the biz for those (rare) cold Brisbane days.

Hope this helps
