Title: Apple Koolaid
Post by: duccarlos on September 10, 2014, 08:35:39 AM
Let me start by saying that I'm not an Apple hater. I own my share of Macs, not buying another PC for personal use ever again, iPhones, used a 5 up to this year and gave it to my wife, and iPods.

What is bothering me is the fanboy reaction to the watch. I understand some people's enthusiasm towards the brand, but some are reacting as if Apple wasn't late to the party. Some posts have been downright ignorant about the fact that so many other companies have similar devices on the market for at least 1 year, if not more. You can make the argument that they might be making it better, but it's impossible for you to argue that they're innovators in this space like they were with the iPod, iPhone and iPad don't count since it's also known that others tried before Apple, but were not successful.

Eating and vomiting was popular during Roman times.  People like to herd.  Convince enough people that scatophagia is cool and people will line up.

If the iPhone were water-resistant, I would own one. I personally think that Apple makes very good devices, but damn, some of these fanboys are delusional

Samsung Galaxy S4 sport is waterproof.
Just saw one that my buddy had.  Might have been a galaxy 5, not sure.  Regardless, the screen/camera was amazing---better than any phones I've seen by a wide margin.  The waterproof feature was a long-time coming and definitely makes it stand out.  If only it wasn't so dang large (I like phones that don't take two hands to hold).

I switched from apple to an android-based phone last year and it's been great.  Not a better or worse system, just different.  Apple ain't bad, it's just one of many good smart phones out there, rather than the smartphone, as it was for many years.

But as for OP comment, yes the fanboy craziness is a little cultish.  I mean, it's a watch and, as you pointed out, not even the first digi-watch.  The real revelation in the apple release is the payment feature.  Mobile pay I think is the next big step.

ARe you sure it wasn't the Galaxy Note?  That's got the 5.7" screen.

The S5 has a 5.1in display, the S4 has 5.0in.  (diagonal).  The S5 isn't much bigger.

No, it wasn't the note.  I've seen the note and it is a small aircraft carrier.  Basically, I consider pretty much everything bigger than the iphone 4 "so dang large".

I used to have (and love) the LG made Google G2X, which was about the same size as the iphone.  It was enough, but now that I've had the S4 for a year -- with a 12 mp camera and the ability to drive an HDMI tv with it, I'm glad I made the switch.  The Note is too big for my use, the S4 is really on the upper end of usable size.

I have the S5, which is water-resistant. Within a few month of owning it, my kids spilled water on the thing. I gave my wife the iPhone5 and a few days after I found it to be super small. You get used to whatever you handle every day.

And again, I am not an iPhone hater. I find that it does certain things much better than Android. With the S5 I don't feel like I need to buy a $80 case to protect the damn thing.

I hate all phones and fanboys.  [evil]  I can still remember the day we could be productive without interruptions and never be located by some "friend" app.

All kidding aside, this latest love affair has done one thing for me.....I'm just about to buy the RAZR MAXX with a real battery.

The main thing I like about Apple is that it's not Microsoft. I was reminded of that yesterday when I had to work on a PC with some malware issues. I kept getting popups & redirects, and half the programs wanted my permission to be updated at the same time... [bang] Each one needs you to give some sort of blessing 4 or 5 times to do the update as well.

Not so with Apple. Sure stuff needs to be updated once in a while but it only demands a moment of your time and then it does its thing.

The other thing I like about Apple is that the devices are easy to use and work well with one another.
So far I have a Mac mini, Apple TV, 2 iPads, Time Machine backup, and some where around here there is an iPod Video. All my music, docs, photos, address books, calendars and other stuff show up between all the devices except the TV one. (Just music, photos & videos on that one)

But I don't have an iPhone. My phone is a LG something or other that costs about $20 bucks.
I don't think Ive become a "fan boy" but I'm sold. Apple is neat and easy with minimal fuss. I have plenty of other stuff in life to fuss with without fooling around with a bunch programs and hardware built to a standard, that are supposed to work with one another.

The original rant was more geared towards the marketing machine and those that believe it blindly. There's not question that Apple has done an excellent job with integrating their ecosystem (using big words). My issue is more that they have stopped being the innovators. When you're at the top of the mountain, it's easy to sit down a take a breather, but that allows the other guys to kick you off.

I'm particularly impressed that both of my GF's Apple products, iPhone and iPad, failed within 6 months of purchase.
They were both replaced under warranty.....
with 'reconditioned' units, as a matter of fact.

And the 'class' that she went to at the Apple store (and paid for, IIRC) to learn how to use the iPad.... 3/4 of the time was spent helping one lady sign onto her e-mail or some such rot.

And it seems there's a brand new OS every freaking year for her dad's Apple desktop unit.
Which seems to f*ck up a half dozen things on it.

Awesome.  [roll]

6 macbooks, 2 imacs, 3 ipads, and 4 iphones since 2006.

1 macbook had an out-of-warranty video card failure. replaced free of charge.
1 imac had a hard drive failure. replaced free of charge.
1 iphone had a "lock" button that worked intermittently. replaced with reconditioned unit free of charge.

should've complained and either had the class credited or been given the option at attend again.

because there *has* been a new OS every year since 10.7. don't install the new OS, but keep installing security updates for the old one.

Doesn't everybody (Microsoft, linux) come out with a new OS every couple of years?

The New OSX coming out this fall will be free from what I understand.

no.

XP - 2001
Vista - 2006
Windows 7 - 2009
Windows 8 - 2013

Notably, the largest installed based of Windows users are on XP, much to MS's chagrin.

3 ipods, 5 iphones, 4 ipads, 1 macbook air. Only problem was a stuck lock button on an iphone which they replaced free of charge. The macbook I sold after a couple months because I am a PC user and couldn't make the switch. It's not as intuitive as they claim. I spent more time trying to figure out how to do stuff then working.

And no one has talked about resale. I've sold every iphone and ipad as I replaced with a newer model and reclaimed about 75% of what I paid for them. So my latest phone cost $300 when I renewed my contract with Verizon. I sold the previous used phone for $250. I've used the $300 phone for two years and will likely get $200 for it.

First Iphone was the 3G. I bought it the week it came out. I had it for 3 and half years. Moved to the Iphone 4 and now the 5C. All of which I have had zero problems whatsoever.

The computer I am writing this on is my MacBook that I bought in 2007. Absolutely no problems other than a cracked screen that I replaced after I flicked a quarter at it by accident.

No complaints here.

I tried the Galazy S4 for one week and returned it. I couldn't stand it.

My first iPhone was a 3Gs after spending a a few years* calling the iPhone a toy. I lost my precious BlackBerry and buckled under the pressure. I was hooked soon after. My wife also thought it was a toy, then she started using mine. She forced me to get her a 4 soon after. The original iPhone really was a game changer, same as the Mac.

* Years because I was working at AT&T at the time and knew some guys that were lucky enough to test the iPhone. Got to play with it before there were any apps)

Thats pretty much how I felt about the iPad. Thought it was a toy when I had my sister in laws in my hands. Then not quite 2 years later I got one to take credit card payments at the farmers market and found out how it could not only replace my obsolete Palm Pilot, but be even more useful than the Palm ever was. Then My wife started using it and I had to get her one....
