Was checking out this new nano car and saw this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ9iNZeUOe4&feature=related. Pretty interesting my wife is from India and she said its a common occurrence but is the first time I ever saw a family riding one motorcycle.
lata,

good god.
I wonder what rear spring and preload setting he uses. [laugh]
1. Sounds like a thumper [thumbsup]
2. The mom is sitting with both legs off one side. Like a "proper lady" should ride! [clap]
[laugh]
you mean "side-saddle"?
If that dress goes into that rear wheel she's gonna be sari. :'(
i could understand no ac, no power windows, no radio, none of those (use to be barebone american cars!) but NO POWER STEERING?
Has anyone over there every tried to parallel park or drive slow with no power steering? its almost impossible. to turn the wheel without the car moving a bit, even then its freaking hard as hell. I guess we cant complain about our heavy clutches anymore. [bacon]

Uh, yeah, I have. In fact, I passed my drivers license driving a 1959 Ford Custom stick shift. I was 17 years old and weighed 155 lbs - not exactly a he-man.
Parallel park a car w/o power steering? Yeah I did it for years in classic VW's it was no problem.
The tire contact patches are minimal and the weight is way less than on the behemoth cars the US manufacturers make now.
Jeez Louise.. :o I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
Didn't Hitler coin the Volkswagen name?... aka, "people's car"??

eh, the car might weigh 1500lbs, they should be fine...
My first official driving lesson was in a '56 Oldsmobile with manual steering. My first car was a '57 Ford with manual steering. Most of my pre '87 cars had manual steering.

;D I am sure it has a sari-guard ...
the only car ive ever driven without power steering was a old 197x chevelle, Bare bone with motor only. My friend picked it up to build as a drag car and i got a chance to just drive the old thing and when i was stopped turning the wheel required both hands and a drop of sweat. When it was moving though, not a big deal and wasnt hard at all. but when it was stopped. [bang] Maybe it was just that car.
With manual steering, or technically any steering, the wheel should only be turned with the car moving. Crawling speed is sufficient to reduce the load on steering. Power steering has simply made us lazy.

I parallel park my 5 ton military jeep that has power nothing.
My '62 ford also has no power steering.
I am frickin' huge though. :P
I've parallel parked a couple of big old cars with no power steering (did it for friends that didn't feel confident parking them).
I'm little.
My 1983 Brat doesn't have power anything. If I have to pull out of a tight parking spot, my arms get really warm. I learned to drive in a 1960 something Rambler with a three-speed on the column shifter. I loved that car. No seat belts, no power anything, and a metal dash. Leaded gas smelled good too. Geez, I'm old.
one of my coworkers came from India 13 years ago (just got just citizenship) and we work in close proximity. recently he asked about my love of motorcycles and was very confused. he said when he was in India they were the lowest form of motorized transportation and the idea of riding one for fun went right over his head. he also said he routinely drove around with his entire family on it (3 kids +wife)
My first car was a 76 GMC Jimmy with a 3 on the tree and no power steering. It took a little effort to steer in a parking lot but it wasn't too bad.
The 91 S10 PU I had also did not have power steering. That was real easy to steer until I put 245/50 R14's on the front.
Once you get them rolling down the road though they are easy to steer.
That little car they are talking about there...I would pick power windows & locks before I worried about the steering.
