Going to ride from FL to N.C./Virginia for fall leaf viewing next month. Need some side bags and tank bag. Contacted "twisted throttle" to see what they suggest.
GIVI makes a side bag mounting rack T681.
Ducati Performance has a pair Of Monster Soft Saddlebags 96777308B -- Not much info avail about these except the cost $$$. Anybody have these? Do they come with a rack?
Wolfman makes some nice waterproof bags that others on here have used. Will prob get some of their gear.
Thx!
The Ducati kit includes the rack and it seems to be a little more sturdy + some sort of locking system, but it's around $550. Ducati Monster 696 796 1100 touring luggage panniers tail pack bag (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhxq6Z_ErAw#)
The GIVI system is around 130 + 160 for the rack and two bags, but the bags are mounted partially with velcro straps over the seat which could mean no passenger....
Large tank bags are a PITA at every fill up and some people dislike how they might block the rider movement and/or view of the instruments.
Travel light, get a tail bag and strap it down well. My opinion.
The issue with the x96 is the narrow/small tail. you have to get something made for it, than a generic. I custom made side brackets and got a 3 part generic and even that had issues. did Germany to Italy with the setup. spent $75 including metal and bags, friend welded it up.

When is your trip and where are you heading? I've got a trip planned for October 20th - 24th. We are starting in Front Royal, Va and hitting Skyline Drive and then connecting to the Blue Ridge Parkway ending in Cherokee, NC.
I'm going to be running a Kriega Drypack 30L bag. I'm mounting it sideways on the tail. If I needed extra storage, I would pick up 1 or 2 extra Drypack 20L bags and call it a day. They are completely waterproof, easy to pack, and don't move cinched down.
Thx for the replies -- tried to get some info about the ducati performance bags from my dealer - he was no help except to say that they are $550 [laugh]
I have planned to leave Jax 10/23 head up to Atlanta then up into N.C. and VA via skyline drive then to wash d.c. Stay a day or two with friend s and then ride back!! I hope the leaves are good, the weather is cool but not freezing, and most importantly -- my A** can take it! [thumbsup]
I got some wolfman monarch pass side bags and a wolfman explorer lite tankbag. I have a few good dry bags I use when kayaking I can pack some stuff in.

Just checked the EXIF on some snaps I took three years ago on the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. For color you'd be safer to leave a week or so earler. Otherwise you may be past prime. Remember, at elevation in NC it will be chilly until past lunchtime. Plot your gas stops on the parkway too as there are long stretches without gas near exits. NOT kidding. 8) Ask "the_Journeyman". ;D http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=65702.msg1212409;topicseen#msg1212409 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=65702.msg1212409;topicseen#msg1212409)
Re: peak leaf colors. Yes - would be nice to go up a week earlier but I planned the time off from work months ago for something else which got cancelled - so now had to improvise something to do instead. When I lived in Wash D.C. it seams like the colors were always nice in the city just before Halloween so I am sure some areas will be great and others already peaked.
Re: gas on blue ridge skyway. I have ridden parts of it in southern N.C. near "the dragon" so I know there are no gas stops unless you get off and go into a town along the way. Need to stop for breaks anyway + I will bring some 1 liter fuel bottles.
FYI- the Givi T681 is sold in two parts T681 and T681 KIT (the mounting hardware)
and the T681 KIT is discontinued

I just ordered the T681 -- it will suck if only get half the parts I need. [bang]
They did not ship it yet so I will contact the shipper and see if I need to cancel if they dont have the other half. I remember thinking there were some other parts avail (thought they were just for a topcase mount which I did not want).
Teh SW Motech tail pack fits perfectly on the tail. I have one ( :
Good news -- Got the Givi T681 saddle bag luggage rack and Kit. Both parts were in stock and It looks like a good solid set-up.
Bad news -- a few months ago, after one of my rear turn signals broke (it was kicked by my son when he was getting off the bike after a ride), I installed an Evotech fender eliminator - now I see the relocated rear turn signals are in the way and I will have to get an integrated rear brake light before I can install the saddle bag rack.
So many choices!! Not sure what to get myseld
