Gday all,
I recently bought a new black 659 (learner legal Aus) and after lurking around here have discovered I want to do many things to it! Its stock at the moment except cf termis and a fender eliminator.
Basically im looking for suggestions and help on how do to things ;D I need new mirrors as stock ones vibrate relentlessly. I was also thinking of getting the centre tank part done in red. New rearsets and a few other things.
As my name suggests I am pretty much a bike virgin!
Any help would be great
Cheers ;D
We have the same mirrors and mine don't vibrate that much. ??? Not broken in? Throttle bodies out of balance? Riding around at 2,500 RPM?! ;D If the latter, well, then...

haha not broken in perhaps, is only got 1500k's on he clock, lol definitely not riding at 2500 RPM. Maybe the termis have something to do with it? other than that maybe its just vibrating a lot more than any other bike I've ridden. Thanks for your input ;D
Not nearly broken in. ;) Start revving it now. Until it has a few thousand, it vibrates ~ 3,500 RPM and below. Should be smooth above 4,000. Not much you can do around town though. If it isn't smooth at 5,000, the throttle bodies might need a balance.
How do you balance throttle bodies above idle?
Moi? :o No shop manual. Might be possible with the dealer hand tester? On my other bike it's done that way. Only guessing.

With the sync adjust screw/mechanism, depending on what it's got.
Admittedly still new to Ducatis, but my other experiences with FI is that bleed air is only a factor at idle speed. Are you saying that it is an adjustment which would affect running at 5000 RPM? Bleed air adjustment is what I thought of as throttle body balancing vs linkage adjustment.
Color me confused. ???

Balancing what happens when you twist your right wrist if I understand what Speeddog is saying, i.e. balancing flow at the throttle plates..., so sure, applicable to ALL off-idle RPM.
Expert definition needed.
I understand what throttle plate sych is. I also thought I understood what throttle body balancing is, having done many via manometer method.
When Curmudgeon suggested throttle body balancing at 5000 RPM I thought WTF!
Is my confusion coming from his meaning throttle linkage/plate synch instead of TB balncing?
No expert...but...
I don't think he meant to imply that 5K was where the TB's were balanced...
just that if the bike doesn't run smoothly at that rpm a balance is in order.
Different techs I've come across use a different rpm figure to perform a balance with their understanding of where the most benefit can be gained.
Of course, the OP's bike may not even need a balance yet. My son rode mine when it was 8 miles and said it shook worse than an HD! ;D 1,500 miles later it was exponentially smoother and continued to smooth out past 5,000 miles.
Its smooth to ride (i never sit under 4k as I never have to ride through traffic), but the mirrors I can barely see out of. I.e if i wanted to check out a pretty lady in the car behind I would have no chance! [evil] Oh well, don't like the look of these mirrors anyway! Was thinking underbar mirrors would look good? Also, does anyone know a place near Canberra that does ceramic coating? Im thinking Sydney is closest option :-\
It just hit me that you have the skinny, non-tapered 696 bar. My 796 has the tapered bar and mine's a Rizoma replacement. I'll bet the vibration is from the harmonics of the bar. Maybe Carlos in Panama will spot this and have a suggestion. The stock mirrors are quiet at speed (turbulence) combined with the mini fairing vs a naked front end. Unless you address the bar vibration in some way, nothing else will be clear either probably. Bar end weights maybe?

Nope, you got it correct, air bleed will become less significant and eventually insignificant as speed increases. But that should be your first step.
throw some crg bar ends on her
