Title: NooB Insurance Question
Post by: DrNo08 on July 12, 2008, 02:42:31 PM
Just got a used 695 with the Termi Kit/ECU/Airbox already installed but I'm on GEICO setting up my insurance.  It's asking me about "JET KIT" and "What Stage Is It?", etc.  I don't know if the ECU qualifies as a jetkit or not.  The bike is not stock so I'm not sure how to answer this question.  I'd appreciate your input.  Thanks.

Bike is fuel injected. If their database doesn't comprehend that concept, then don't even worry about it. The DP ECU is not a "go-fast" add on. It's to smooth out fuel delivery at low RPM and correct an overheating issue.

...Right?  ;)

I gotcha.  I'm just don't want them to deny my claim one day b/c I didn't tell them I had a "jet kit".

Technically speaking, is the ECU considered a jet kit and if so, what stage would it be?

I understand your apprehension. Insurance fraud is bad, m'kay? [leo] Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you.

Doing a little bit of looking on the DynoJet web site, it looks as thought the major difference between a Stage I and a Stage II kit is that the Stage II kit is designed to be run on a bike with the airbox lid completely removed. While the Termi kit comes with a hi-flow air filter, it does not change the actual lid.

By that logic, the DP ECU should be considered a Stage I kit.

HOWEVER, since you're looking at using Geico, now would be a good time to pick up the phone and call one of their policy question lines. Your bike is fuel injected and they're not asking legitimate questions.

Also: I don't know where you live or what sort of driving record you have, but I have not found Geico's rates to be very competitive. When I was looking for insurance on my Monster last year Geico's rates were about twice what I found at some other places.

State Farm and Foremost both classify the Monster as, I believe, a standard. Geico classifies it as a sport bike. If you haven't yet, shop around.

Since they asked for a jet kit on an FI bike, say no, you don't have one - they can't hold it against you on account of them being morons.

Also, I have used GEICO here in CA for years for both my car and bikes and they have always been the cheapest option I could find.  I can also speak for their customer service as I had a 749 stolen a few years back and they were very helpful and I received my settlement quickly.
