Title: Motorcyle Repair/Service Rates
Post by: Travman on July 12, 2008, 07:57:50 PM
I dropped my bike off at the new Ducati dealer in Orange Park, FL.  They took over the previous Ducati/Triumph shop that was located a few miles away and compined it with their existing Suzuki dealership.  Anyways their labor rate is $130/hr.  I believe the previous shop's rates were around $75 per hour and I think the dealership near Daytona was also around $75/hr.  Hopefully my work will be covered under waranty, but they wanted me to sign something that I would agree to pay at least $130 for one hour of labor if Ducati doesn't cover the repair.  I left the bike and told them to have their service manager call me in the morning.  Since they are new to Ducati, I'm worried they will have no ability to get parts and won't know how to submit the paper work for warranty work and then will just tell me they tried to submit it and want me to pay.

Sorry for the long story.  Has anybody ever heard of a $130/hr rate for motorcycle repair?

I've seen $100 but not $130

That's getting nutso expensive.  I know that its really expensive for shops to maintain insurance and well trained mechanics but holy cow.

My shop charges $75/hour, it is definitely one of the best priced in the SF Bay Area.

Sounds like somewhat of a scam to be honest.  :-\

My dealer charges $75 per hour as well, and he has a slight reputation of overcharging for repair work (I won't name names, but he's been nothing short of pleasant + helpful to me)...

you may want to double-check just why they arrived at that price.  :-\

For the SoCal peeps, I found out about this place:

http://www.intunecycles.com/

In Tune Cycles
10950 Tuxford St. unit #1
Sun Valley Ca 91352
818-768-9026
Brian Moffatt.

The owner and sole mechanic was the lead mechanic for Beverly Hills Ducati, very cool guy.

Just to give you and example, he charges around $700 or so for the 7500 mile service.  He charges $15 to mount and balance wheels if you take just the wheels or $35 on the bike.

I'll be going to him again.

Yeah, that does sound like a good guy who runs a good business. I posted before about how my dealer has a rep for overcharging, but I was riding one day and noticed a LOT of driveline lash. I came to find out that chain was super loose, and I didn't have tools so I rode it down to him and he brought it into his garage + tightened it for free. Really cool...

I don't get whay people think he's a ripoff. Maybe they just aren't used to the conventional labor rates??   ???

That's pretty steep.  If they aren't even licking your balls for that much, I'd say find another shop.

+1 on Nichols in Milpitas. They are good and do not rip you off for time or labor.
