Hey,
I just got a wild hair up my ass and have begun looking into spending some time in Dec/Jan down in Australia. Nowhere specific. I've only been there for 1 day as I flew into Townsville and caught my ship back to Japan. So, I'm looking for options. Any you may have. I'll bring the helmet and jacket should some riding be available. But, I'm really just wanting to have some fun for a week or so. It would just be me. I'm usually pretty good about wandering around and having fun on my own. A tour guide would be nice (specifically an attractive one of the female variety), but not required. A bed would be cool as the plane ticket might be a bit pricey. Even a couch for a night or two. This is just a quick idea. If not feasible, possible, affordable, I'll just stay here in Japan. No worries.
Scott
There are a heap of options available...what do you really want to see and do?
Do you want to just relax on a beach drinking [drink] or stay in a city and have a lot of [drink] while riding some good roads with a few of us?
I kow you would have a blast anywhere you go BUT if you want some drinkin/riding buddies and ride some of the best roads in Australia (IMHO ;)) Sydney is the go. [thumbsup]

If you call shitty weather 25 degree sunny days. ;)
Honestly, I'm not picky where. If I get some riding in, yeah. If it's just some dirt riding, that's cool (never been dirt biking). I was figuring to play tourist during the day. Could drink in the evening/night/morning. Would like to see the usual tourist stuff. I could do Sydney, Melbourne, beaches, nature, whatever. I would love to hook up with DMFers wherever I end up. I understand what I'm asking is pretty vague. If someone were to tell me "hey, I'm going to take a vacation to the US, what should I do?" I'd probably slap them. RIght now, I am looking for some different touristy things. Where are the most beautiful women? And friendly.. they have to be friendly and like Americans (hell, if need be, I could bring my uniform.... nahh).
All this is still completely in my head still. Lots of outside influences I've got to take care of first.
Oh Ho!! I can see a reopeneing of the Siddlee/ Mextoria weather debate again??? [cheeky]
I may be wrong but I think Syd has got more precipitation (Read pissing down [roll]) than Mel over the last 12 months?? [thumbsup]
Friendly AND like Americans .... geez don't know if we can do that
Hey, last name is Rodriguez... I can pretend to be Mexican....
Ok, at least a Coast... Right now, leaning towards the East Coast. Seems to be more places to go. No?
east coast is good for me, how about having a look at the intro thread for oz monster, to see where we are.

Ok, that's about as much leg humping as I can muster at the moment (need more [drink] ).
I do see a lot of NSW (and I always thought that was some sort of Not Safe for Work marker). SO, that would be best. Hmm.. this might
actually work...

pokey, if you end up in NSW, then we'd definitely schedule some activities around your visit - typically including some two wheeled action - we'll rustle up a bike for you somehow.
I'm sure we can help sort the details once you have fleshed out some plans [thumbsup]
I think it would be good. I don't think the ship will make it down there prior to me transferring back tot he states. So, I gotta go on my own while I can. I'll be checking some prices for plane tickets through the week and possible hotel packages <insert leg humping of female DMFers for a cozy place to sleep>.
Poke man, go for the East Coast, I reckon. I am biased, but Sydney would be a good bet. There's lotsa tourist stuff to do - blue mountains, opera house, bridge climb, beaches etc, as well as some great rides if you hook up with DMFers [moto] Sorry to the Mubourne guys - your part of Oz is OK too, but too bloody cold for me ;D ducsport
bloody pusseys slow poke come to tassie where the men are men and the sheep are scared, open speed limits on the twistie road cheap acomadation , just pull up and sleep in some ones barn , better beer , brilliant weather at that time of year , one day good for riding the next will be good for sking [laugh]
I live in Briz but + 1 for Tas Victoria and N.S.W for that time of year, Victoria has the best beaches ( ooh shit hope I haven't started something) and of course it has the "great ocean road", all 3 states have great riding, as far as cities go though Melbourne and Sydney, interchangeable, Brisbane don't bother, Perth nice, Adelaide asleep after 9 pm, Darwin hot and Hobart improving.

Lemme know when.
big (I can probably lend you a bike as well...)
Ok, I'm in.
Gotta confirm I can get leave and the exact date. Hoping for ~ 10 days in country. I'm hoping I don't require much babysitting as I can wander around just about any town for the day if people are working. I would love a base of operations. I think I'm going to look to fly into Sydney and go from there.
Big - I am more than willing to take you up on the room and would do whatever I can to compensate you. Know any pretty girls to show me around?
big -
I'm a go. Filling out my leave request now. Can you PM an address and phone # I can put on my request (PM me so it's not here public). Or, any close hotels that aren't too much $$$ (and would still have room over the New Year). Leave dates are ~29 Dec ~9 Jan.
I'm rather shooting from the hip on this and will be taking care of plane tickets in the next couple days.
Scott
Okie Dokey. I fly in to Sydney the 29th. Will get more specifics soon (don't have the itinerary in front of me). Anyone recommend place to stay "downtown" or some other such place. I was speaking with Big about it. And, he gave me a tentative. But, looking for some info.
I would have no problem just landing and finding a place. But, it will be through New Year's and I want to make sure I'm good.

We're out of town from the 27th Dec till the 4th Jan or so (and I'm not having much headway convincing Rachel that we ought to let "some guy I kinda know from the internet" stay at our place while we're away without ever having met him... Not _too_ surprising I guess.)
So if you need somewhere from the 5th Jan, let me know. Earlier than that will get complicated though.

You probably wanna get on it pretty quick, accommodation in Sydney City books out over new years...
Look here (http://www.australia.travelmall.com/content/m_region/31?outMth=01&inYear=2008&outYear=2009&outDay=05&inDay=29&adults=1&inMth=12) (that'll take a while to load) - a "normal" weekend will usually show 50 or 60 "available" hotels, over new years it's only showing 11 right now. That doesn't mean the hotels are actually booked out, it just means they figure they'll be able to sell all their rooms themselves, without having to share profits with random websites... If you cant find anything suitable on the travel websites, start looking for the hotels or chains own websites, and use the phone to talk to them direct - there's a pretty good chance they'll still have rooms available even if all the major travel sites (and sometimes even their own websites) are showing them as full.
big (full disclaimer, I used to do a lot of work on that travelmall.com website...)
Right now, I'm deciding between the Westin or Radisson in downtown Sydney.
edit: Staying at the Westin. 29th - 9th. Flying out on the 10th. Should be a nice long vacation. And, I honestly have nothing to do. Just flying down by myself and will explore Sydney and enjoy the nice summer weather. Figure out something for NYE. Prolly play typical tourist and see the usual stuff. Anything else you can think of, please let me know over the next 5 weeks or so.
If not, I'm at least hoping for a night of binge drinking with some DMF OZ folks.

Budget isn't huge. But figuring to spent ~$1,500 - $2,000 spending cash for trip. That includes bar and food $$$ too.
Figured my days would consist of going for a run or swim in the morning, having breakfast, walking around (I'm used to spending a day walking - it's a military thing), taking pictures, visiting the Opera House, famous places, things like that. If I see an adventure that looks interesting, I'd jump on that.
Speaking of jumping on that, I generally have no preference between blondes, brunettes, and redheads. I'm 29. So, +- 5 years or so. I'll even go -8 if it becomes interesting. And yes, sometimes quantity is better than quality.

Cool,
OK Places to visit that are free or minimal cost (BTW anything below $20aus per adult in Sydney is considered low cost)
1. OperaHouse, get close and personal. See how the shell's are finished etc. This is free and 24Hr/day, walk around its perimitter, the views are great.
2. See the Sydney Harbour bridge, forget climbing it (its about $175). For much less (i think it was $15) you can go up the south-east tower! Then walk to the otherside on the pedestrian footpath. The path is open 24/7 and is free. You need to access it from Cumberland St, Concierge at the Westin will give you a free map.
3. Once on the other side of the bridge you can follow the foot paths (heading generally east) to Bradleys Head, awesome views and a good couple of hours each way walking. Taking in some nice parks and some of sydney's pricier housing.
4. Visit the ROCKS, its a historic/touristy part of town, art, bars, cafe's and other tourists will be flocking it. But if you explore the back lanes, not just George St, you can find some interesting things to see. Don't eat there though, far too $$$$. At night a few night spots open up, such as the Fortune of War, the Lowenbrau and the Argyle Stores are the big ones to see & [drink] at.
5. From the rocks, follow George St under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, its interesting from a mechanical POV at how this mamoth thing even stands up.
6. Take a Ferry (river boat) to Parramatta. You will see Sydneys largest water way and for $15 its cheap going. Lots of nice housing and boats all over... reminds you about the wealth in this town. Ferry departs from Circular Quay hourly, allow 1.5 hours travel. Then you can return the same to city, or walk to parramatt Westfield shoping town (a largish mall) and take the train back in. Sydney trains are a suburban experiance, and will be a bit of an eye opener, really shows off the eclectic mix of cultures this city suffers/benefits from.
7. Goto Darling Harbour, theres a few cool shops, IMAX theatre, boats, the Maratime Museum, and the Casino.... if your into that sorto of thing
8. The city has a mass of shops, your hotel is particularly close to Pitt St Mall, their all pricy but worth a look. The food court has some cheap eats.
9. China Town is about 8 blocks walk from your hotel, affordable eating and something to see and do. Don't expect to hear or read much english though.
10. Near chinatown is Paddys Markets, local markets with plenty of cheap produce or cheap gift ideas. Much better than the normal gift shops in terms of price.
11. Center Point Tower, is close by in Pitt St mall, not free, but if your into views its hard to beat.
12. Botanical Gardens adjacent to the Opera House, will soak up half a day of exploring. Walk it all then keep going east to the Woolloomolloo ship yards.
13. Once at Woolloomolloo Visit the infamous Harry's Cafe the wheels, it cooler at night. There is a small Naval base there too. Plus local bars...
14. Close to Woollomollo is the infamous Kings Cross, its pretty quiet during the day, but Friday and Saturday nights after 10pm, it kicks into gear. Countless bars, clubs, pubs, tourists, strippers, hoes, etc... make the red light distric interesting place. Walk it, its about 1/2 hour East South East from your hotel. I recommend Hugos if you like it fancy/trendy or the World if you like it a bit more raw.
15. Since you like a walk, better yet take a Bus, ask concierge about the Sydney Explorer and Bondi Explorer goverment bus tours, cheap and easy. Take notes, see what you wan to come back late to see in detail.
16. Bondi & Coogee beach, great beaches, Sydney icon and a nice water front walk between the two. Allow a day, great place for photos and meeting other tourists. For its the beaches that highlight Sydneys lifestyle.
17. Lane Cove & Kuringay Royal National Parks, speak to concierge.
18. Frasers Motorcycles, australias biggest and DUCATI importers. Out at Parramatta Rd North Strathfield, near the M4, this is a bus and walk. About 1 hours travel from the hotel. See lots of nice dukes and other bikes.
19. Northen beaches, Manly, Curl Curl, DeeWhy, Freshwater, Palm beach etc all worth a visit, if not some lazying about anyway. (ps. Friday nights at Manly, at a pub/bar call the Stiyne, is Brazilian night, lots of freindly Brazilians, and you might bump into me there.
20. Just across from your hotel on either side of the plaza are Vault, bar 333 and MARCS. If you like [drink] and maybe a dance with a local sheila (sheila = girl, but dont use that term).
21. Neutral Bay, if you need some serious Japanese food, this suburb is were the majority of Japanese have setteled, its also were i live.... on the other side of the harbour and easy to get to. Not the cheapest eating though, proper Japanese isnt cheap here.
22. Toroga Park Zoo, see a Koala, Kangaroo, Wallaby, and all those snakes and spiders you heard about. Take the Ferry across, its worth it. But not the cheapest thing to do. i think it was over $30 for an adult, but don't quote me on that one.
23. There is a few night clubs/bars about town, like Ivy, Establishment, Bungalo 8, James Squire, Tank, etc,. if your into that.
24. In Darling harbour there is both a Wildlife park and an Aquarium, i think their a little pricy, but worth a visit.
25. If your up for a walk. You can travel to the south head, going through the southern hemispheres most expensive real state, all the way to the tip. Its called the GAP and you will know why once you get there. This is a full 4 hours walk and 4 back again, so see how you go. If not see the concierge about getting a bus to the south head to see the gap. Nice view of the ocean, Sydney harbour and some seriously price realstate.
26. Hyde park (close to the hotel) is neat, is near some churches and has a War Memorial to visit.
27. Think about a Day trip the Capital, Canberra. You will need to spend a little, its 3hrs by bus each way. But both Goverment Houses (old & new) plus the War Memorial are well worth it.
28. There is much to be said about the Harbour both in Day & Night, its got very different looks. Easy way to take some great photography and spend time looking around.
29. Look out for street magazines in shops (particularly the trendy street clothing store) there's always
live music on at many venues across sydney, most of which are free entry.
30. On the corner of King St and George St there is a late-hours supermarket. Easy way to buy food, take back to the hotel for cheap easy/healthy eats. Its called COLES Express, theres also one inside the Wynyard train station plaza, 2nd level. This is much more affordable than the prices you pay in the hotel or the surrounding restaurants. Plus it gets you out & about, lots of single young business women about too... ;)
Hope that gives you some ideas mate. - Chris

Definitely more (better?) fights at the Roundhouse. The Workers is a much classier establishment in comparison.
Speaking of class establishments...
So.. umm.. this is going to seem like a weird request.
I've been to a strip club/bar in every country I've been in (hey, some people go to a McDonalds - I really don't like McDonalds). Right now, the list tops out at Spain, Italy, Malta, France, Croatia, Greece, England, Gibraltar, Seychelles, Russia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, BVI, Guam, Saipan, Turkey, and probably a couple more that are a bit hazy (don't ask me to rank them). I didn't get to one on the one night I was in Australia. So, I'm looking for an opportunity. Just to say I did. If anyone knows of one, please let me know and I might see if I can work it into an evening. Or, I can catch it my 1 night in Brisbane (near the airport) for my long ass layover.
Thank you for the assistance.

So.. umm.. this is going to seem like a weird request.

Not that I'm an expert in such establishments ;) , steer clear of any strip joints in Kings Cross, they are just WRONG!
Go to either Mens Gallery or Pure Platinum, both in Pitt Street in the Central Business District of Sydney. Well, I've been to Mens Gallery. Once. [evil]
Now that I think about it, let me know when you are going. [thumbsup]

You'll get a _much_ better response to that request on another local motorcycle site bikeme.tv (http://forums.bikeme.tv). Be prepared for some somewhat coarser language that you get here, but you're also significantly more likely to end up with a bunch of guys saying "hell yeah, lets all go drinking at tittybars with the new guy!" :-)

You failed to pipe up with "Hell yeah! How about Thursday? Lets get a possey together! I can get us a discount at Men International and I know the doorman at Showgirls! But we'll have to avoid Porkys, three of the girls there are still trying to serve papers on me..." - which is the sort of response you'll get from Boris and his crew [evil]

T.I.B. I will let you know and we will find a night. Not to feel left out, Jukie and (and if she must bring him) Betty are invited too. Along with anyone else. Strip clubs are always more fun when you bring girls.
And, I think I'll stick with this board. I'm not registering anywhere else.
hey Jukie get to go to her First Strip club YES YES YES

SO.. I take it you're in...
All right..
giggity giggity...
... giggity... goo.
Hey, I just thought of something...
I get to pop Jukie's cherry. It's your 1st time? I feel honored to be there.
yes but like i said previously it depends on work, and Betty, He just might have to tag along with the rest of the guys.
Ohh, we can work around your work. And Betty, we can work around him too... I guess...
he he he your funny, keep us informed as to what you are doing and when you get here
I will, don't worry. I tried to look up those 2 clubs mentioned above. But, it's probably something I shouldn't be going to from a work computer. I did see them on the map though. 1 of them is right around the corner from the hotel. That could either be really good or really bad.
But, I'm hoping to find someone that doesn't require $$$ to show me around. lol.
edit: Hey, what's the weather like round New Years?

poke, im in town and don't need $$ to show ya round mate! (but if your looking for "company", well don't look at me mang, hit those bars. ask for english women from Essex)
as for a strip club, the best looking women are at Dancers Cabaret in the Cross.... trust me as a man in a similar age group to you. This is what you wan't to see. - Chris
ps, sydney in this time of the year is hot & sticky (hi temp, hi humidity,.... now get your mind back in the gutter).

edit: Hey, what's the weather like round New Years?
Hot and humid - it hit 43C (~110F) on New Years Day in '06 in Sydney... It's not usually _that_ hot though, anything much above ~35C or so (~95F) would be considered unusual... You're also quite likely to see at least one of our regular Southerly thunderstorms blow through during your stay. (My sister claims they're the thing she misses most about Sydney since moving to San Francisco 10 years ago...)

I'm sure I'll be fine. Just talking shit. Usually I just wander around by myself pretty well. But, I will be hitting up some bars for nightly entertainment. With an occasional night out to someplace "interesting."
if only i had the time off the help you with the sight seeing etc. anyway will will catch up with you i hope, for a beer or two.
I'm sure we will. It really doesn't concern me. I'm sure by the time I leave, all of you will be sick of me.
WHAT no way, can never get enough of a good thing :-*
that is true...
But, the wallet disagrees.
well we all here will try to make you visit a good one [thumbsup]
I do appreciate it.
I keep telling people here what I'm doing when we talk about our Christmas/New Years leave periods. Most look at me in a cross between jealous hatred and idolization. I'm not complaining. But, I do need to try and get at least some saddle time. If no loaners, anyone know where I can rent a beater bike?

RIght now, I am looking for some different touristy things. Where are the most beautiful women? And friendly.. they have to be friendly and like Americans (hell, if need be, I could bring my uniform.... nahh).
Dude, go to Thailand. The air fare is nothing, hotels are super cheap,.. and the girls are divine. Rich culture and history, so plenty of things to see. Oh - and you can hire any bike for next to nothing.
ps: really easy to meet girls in Thailand. Go to a large department store, cosmetics section - say you are looking for presents for your sisters... and just ask the girl out. Thais tend to be very approachable. [thumbsup]
Umm.. maybe another time. But, this trip, I desire to go to Australia. I'm still optimistic about seeing Thailand during a port visit.

Ok, down to just over a week left. I've started packing and keep grinning when I grab shorts and t-shirts and not long pants, jackets, gloves and thermals. Well, I am bringing pants, gloves and a jacket. But, not to keep me warm.
Brings me to my next question. I got a wild hare up my ass (the gerbil wouldn't fit) to pick up a kangaroo riding suit. Probably 2 piece and well ventilated. Anyone know of a place I can get one close to downtown Sydney or somewhere that would be accessible. I don't need terribly custom. But, if they could do a custom suit while I'm there, I wouldn't complain. Web links are a plus.
Gracias.

shit if you were coming to tassie we could out and boll a few roo over make you one , dont know if you like the fury look tho [laugh]
unfortunately, just cause roos are native to our country it doesn't mean there's a cheap suit to be had. most of the skins are exported to the major brands and used for race suits. bovine is still the leather of choice for off the rack and regular customer suits because the hide is thicker and has much more chance of being crashed in more than once without needing repair. TIGER ANGEL would be your best bet if you're serious about getting a roo suit but it would be custom and they're probably closed over xmas.

I saw 4 monsters today. 1 I caught the rider. He knew nothing and was not 1 of you. Saw a dark parked at Dawes Point. And 2 red ones (1 s2r, 1 696) parked with a bunch of other bikes (including a Guzzi) near King st wharf.
I was also looking for a place to watch tomorrow night. found a couple places. Also found and sampled a few bars. Ivy had a lot of nice scenery. I even met a girl from the US (not what I was looking for)

I'm sure we can help sort the details once you have fleshed out some plans [thumbsup]
I highly recommend hooking up with this crew...entertaining lot [thumbsup]
I will meet whenever/wherever you want. As long as I can find the place. I got you info. But don't have a phone. Just my iPod touch to surf wifi. I check it regularly. So, just tell me when and where. I am up for just about anything.
Dammit someone tell me a decent bar to start drinking at until you sheilas show up. This hotel is stuffy. I am willing to walk for a
Minute to get there. It's almost 5pm. There has to be a decent happy hour somewhere...
