Title: Trying to core my stock pipes
Post by: SterbenSoup on December 10, 2014, 11:14:36 AM
I have an '05 Monster 620, and want to core the pipes, buy I have no experience with a welding torch or a drimmel, nor do I have the tools required.   Any suggestions?

You as well, I'm a bit new to the whole forum thing, and owning a Monster for that matter, just trying to get some input from some fellow Ducati owners

It's cool, but most people new to a forum introduce themselves...

We've got a whole board over here http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?board=14.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?board=14.0) for that purpose.

Some of the advice given will depend on what set of rules you have to follow based on your general location (Continent or country is usually sufficient).

I would not expect it to be cost effective to pay somebody to core your pipes.  You can look in the Parts for Sale section to see if anyone is selling exhaust bits that might fit your bike.

There are also several universal options available for the Dual Side Swingarm bikes like yours.

Sharpen a piece of rebar and core away.   [popcorn]

I did the sharp stick routine on a K100 BMW once........then found a used Staintune that sounded much better........

Take a look at this tutorial, if you haven't seen it already: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=2312.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=2312.0)

Few tools and no welding required. If you're worried about trashing your cans, you can probably find a used set in the classifieds here or on e-bay for less than $100...

You guys are awesome, this is all very helpful.  I can't wait to get started, I just found a friend with a drimmel, and another with a welding cert, so this is looking possible now!

I would go for slip ons.  Better sound, loose some pounds and gain a little ground clearance.

I am thinking about that as well, some of the dan-moto slip ons that I found on the link SpikeC posted would look nice after a good powder coat, and we're fairly cheap, but I'm going to see how this turns out and make a decision from there, thanks for the input though.

Unless you're cranking it over and dragging the mufflers, just core the pipes. If you drag mufflers, get high mount exhaust. I love my Spark high round cans.

Well I finished it up this weekend, decided just to chop them down and paint them instead of actually coring them, then I painted them with some high heat enamel and I think they're looking pretty good for the (lack of) money I had to put in. As soon as I figure out how to post a pic I will haha

If you haven't uncorked the ends yet, that's pretty easy. Somewhat louder but way more rumpity rumpity bass tons.
