Hi all,
I have taken delivery of my new (second hand) Monster. It is standard apart from the Termi pipes.
I booked the bike into a local dealer to have the front sprocket changed to a 14 tooth from standard 15 tooth after reading the many forum advice. From my short rides to the dealer I was hopeful to increase tongue in lower gearing.
The dealer has since called to say that the bike can not be changed. The links on the chain is too short and won't fit a 14 tooth sprocket. I'm real concern about the advice. They say they have looked at chopping a link in the chain, however it results in a fit too tight. Leaving is too slack.
The advice on forum says a 14 tooth is a easy mod. Why woukd this be difficult from the dealer?
Thank you.
Without removing a link at some point in the chain's life you will run out of adjustment. If there is any significant mileage or wear on the chain all should be changed as a unit anyway. Another (which I like better) option is 2 more teeth in the rear.
15 to 14 adds 4mm to the distance between sprockets - not a problem unless the chain already is very stretched. If by pulling on the chain, you can move it half a tooth height 'off' the rear sprocket > change it!

Agreed. It sounds like your chain is past it. I replaced mine at 12,000 miles.
The first mod I did to my Monster was a 14T front sprocket.
A relevant question might be "how many miles on the bike?"
must be a very worn chain. or previously replaced with different gearing that leads to odd positioning of the eccentric.
put a dss on it, that'll fix it.

^This.
I eventually opted for +4 on the rear, 15/43.
Great replies all. Thank you.
The bike is 9 Months old and has 4000 klm son the clock. I would have expected a chain even standard to have been ok. It has been looked after by a fussy rider. Never ridden in rain etc.
Sounds like I might bite the bullet and replace chain and sprocket. The 15/43 sounds like the option. After a second opinion.
I'm very weary of the dealer. They have now stated the bike is running rich down low. They said the ECU may need tweaking or replacement as they did not recognise the aftermarket pipes.
So I have looked at the original document that the previous owner supplied and shore enough the Termi pipes with correct Ducati Performance ECU was supplied and fitted when new. The original dealer is not n QLD and I am based in Victoria. So taking the bike to original dealer is not a option. I have since also confirmed with previous owner whom has been terrific in supplying all info.
The bike is still under warranty. I am thinking to take the bike to another Ducati dealer in Vic to have it again looked at for second opinion.
It's hard when you start to loose trust in a local dealer. Its a real shame as my new bike experience should be filled with excitement and assistance from what is meant to be a Ducati dealership. They had tried to sell me a new Monster 1200 for $21,500 however I bought my EVO for much less privately. They could be punishing me for my decision even though I was honest with them and stated they would collect my servicing.
Thanks again for replied ;)
The chain shouldn't be worn - let's assume it's ok.
15/43 is fine. With a longer chain (104 to 106 links)(one extra 'piece') the axle in it's eccentric adjustable hub will be in the same position as now. No need to worry about wheel to swingarm clearance, ride height or running out of adjustability.
However, if you get just a 14 instead, it's cheaper, faster to change and no need for longer chain. Then you can go for 15/43/106 when it's time for a new chain and sprocket set...
Does it no longer have the Termignonis from the previous owner?
With a DP ECU, it's richer at low revs - that's one of the DP ECU benefits - should run smoother - usually works well with most quality slip ons.
a dp evo ecu is still closed loop. was it reflashed at any time?
Not sure if the ECU was re flashed. However the bike is booked in to you Brad in February so we can see then.
If the DP ECU is designed to run richer with Termi pipes (which are still on bike) then why wouldn't a Ducati dealer know this?
Bike is awesome overall. I'm taking it on a 5 day ride over 4000 Kkms through Victoria and NSW high country in a weeks time. I'll live with the gearing for now and replace when with Brad the Bike Boy service. Which is always the best honest servicing available in Australia for Ducati....
^^ very good plan [thumbsup]
