Title: 50->53mm shim for Cycle Cat top triple clamp?
Post by: obaa on January 11, 2015, 11:14:49 AM
Hi all,

I'm in the midst of tearing down/servicing my '01 Cromo.  At one point, I had been planning on swapping in a set of 996 forks onto my bike, and bought a Cycle Cat triple with a 53mm bore for the conversion.  Budget constraints being what they are, I'm not going to swap forks, but just service and reuse the forks I have.  I'd still want to use my new triple, so I'll need some sort of shim like what would have been used for the bottom triple.

I searched for 1.5mm shim stock so I could make a spacer, but I could only find .8mm shim.  I don't think I want to add 2 stacked shims (would it be safe?), but am now thinking 1.5mm might be too thick for me to correctly bend.  Is something like this already available?

Also, if anyone happens to have a set of 50mm riser clipons for sale, please let me know.  I thought I had made a deal, but I think the seller is backing out on me.

Thanks!

Bending 1.5mm sheet into a ring would be a bit difficult to bend into a ring without specialized equipment.

You could inquire at a sheetmetal fabrication shop, they usually have rolling equipment to make this kind of part.
They may have an appropriate thickness of aluminum or stainless steel.

Another approach would be getting a pair of shims machined.
Most machine shops should be able to make them without issue.
They could make them with a small shoulder, and then they'll be a bit more cooperative during assembly.
