Title: Oblivious idiots!!!!
Post by: HeyThatsMyBike on July 13, 2008, 09:09:37 PM
I'm still so pissed even though this happened a few hours ago!!  Been a month since I've had my brand new 695... Had it parked parallel by a sidewalk and some idiot backed into it and knocked it over!!! I was walking towards my bike and saw him picking it up!! He would've drove away if I was not already there!! He had liability insurance, that's a good thing I suppose! My handlebar, clutch lever, muffler & stand are all bent  [bang]  Not too big as far as damage but seeing my new bike on the ground just sucked!!!  How can someone walk to their car and not see what's parked behind before they get in?!?!? Let alone not seeing it while backing up!?!?!?  Hopefully Santa Barbara Ducati  can pick it up tomorrow and I can get it back soon....  Glad to have this forum to vent!!!

Thanks for the support MS! Hate having to deal with all that insurance stuff... Took pics on my phone and called my roommate right away (he's a motor-cop), so hopefully I can get stuff taken care off soon!  Would hate to be the guy folding towels in the Progressive ad ;)

FlyADuc,
That really sucks, hope you get your bike fix soon.
I have almost the same damage on my bike.
The only difference is I went down with my bike.
I'm so mad at myself, no telling what I would do if someone else knocked it over.

Sorry to hear that 707... didn't you just get a 696 a while ago? I haven't been online for a few days. When did that happen?  Hope you're ok... Really sucks when something like that happens when you have something new, you know?! It's funny, when I first got my car (had it for a month...it was new to me, didn't have plates yet!) some guy ran a stop sign a T-boned me!  Now this with the bike, I don't know?!?! [roll]

Don't be so sure he is oblivious.

It might have been the gremlins!

Just kidding. I'm glad he has insurance and take solace in the fact that he'll have to pay a surcharge on his insurance for the next 7 years!

It happened last week.
It's well discussed on the MOB forum.

There are two ways to look at this.
You can....
A) Lock your bike in a garage, it will remain pistine.
or
B) Ride it, enjoy it, and when stuff happens. Use that as an excuse to mod. [evil]

Do I see this as an excuse for a set of CRG levers and maybe a some new slip-ons ;)

It's got to be (B)!!! I think that's the only way to look at it!  I've got Monster parts in another tab as we speak ;) I'm thinking lane splitters w/ bar-ends and frame sliders as well!

I'm sorry to hear about your bike...

One thing I always make a habit of is to snap a photo of the license plate of any cars parked in front/behind my bike with my camera phone even if its for a quick errand.

When the dealership evaluates the bike, one of the first things they're probably going to look for are the steering stops on the bike frame.
They're little tabs welded under the front head-tube that keep the fork from damaging the frame. If there's even a scratch on them (from the bike laying down) the dealer is likely to total the bike for frame integrity. They can even bend from light pressure of the fork hitting it.
I'd ask that they don't total it out, because then you're probably going to be stuck with a 696 (no offense. I like them too...) because the 695 is probably sold out everywhere.

Glad to hear that you got the guys info/insurance. Get some CRG levers and some new SpeedyMoto Clip-On's!!! (at least new levers...)

Taking pix is definitely a good idea!  About the tabs, I looked under with a flash light (couldn't identify them right away and hope I'm looking at the right thing) but it doesn't look like anything is bent or broken.  Keeping my fingers crossed...
Good

+1

Even if you get a tank dent. Then you can haul out the bondo and custom paint.

And do what with said photos if your bike gets knocked over?
