Hi everyone, new to the forum. I'm looking at a potential purchase and need some suggestions please. Original ad is here: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/eat/mcd/4771252306.html (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/eat/mcd/4771252306.html)
I went over to check it out last week. The bike is very clean for a 2002, rides great, is at a reputable dealer and has been well maintained by them (although it will need maintenance soon). The big problem is that the speedometer unexpectedly failed and is now not working at all. The owner is trying to figure out a workable solution that won't break the bank. I got the feeling it may not be worth the cost to replace on an older bike, also this is a consignment deal so he doesn't have much room to work with me on the price.
I was thinking of making an offer in the low $2000's and fix it later, can anyone advise me on how good of an idea this is, or any alternatives? Please help me get this thing, I'm in love with it already! Thanks :)
Does the speedo needle sweep when you turn the key on?
Yes it does, but after that it goes to zero and doesn't move. It may not even have done the sweeping after the first couple of times, not sure.
Odometer work?
Checking with owner to confirm, but I believe so.
It may have higher miles. Check the dates & miles on any maint. paperwork. Unless someone here knows how to fix it , you're looking at about $150-200 to replace it. These one on ebay a a broken mount for $89 that could be fixed. Offer them at least that much less and replace it your self. I'm in Atl & could help if needed. IMO, Their price seems like the Max dollar for the miles & it's been for sale for a few months. Beautiful bike!

There may be other issues w replacing the speedo on the fuel injected bike. Like key compatibility ??? Mine is carbed so I'm not sure.
the immo is in the dash.
Diagnose first! It could be the speed sensor. If the odometer works the sensor is good. The middle wire should put out an on/off 12 volts as the wheel turns. To assure the wire is good up to the dash the pin in the connector is 17. There is a wiring diagram in the back of your owner's manual. No manual? http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do (http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do)
Appreciate it everyone. Checking with the owner on the odo and a few other things. Trying to work something out with him- really love the bike.
Does the immobilizer live in the dash or just the immobilizer dummy light? I know 2002 was a strange transition year, some of the bikes such as the S4 had immobilizers but fully mechanical clusters, and would run without them.
That's a fantastic Monster btw, and somewhat rare; the only injected M750 and the last year they were made.

There's also a 3A fuse for the speedo sensor which could be blown.

It lives in the dash.
If you want the bike and everything else seems okay, I would offer them their asking price provided they fix the speedometer.
Even if you beat them down $400 - $500 and spend $200 fixing it, you haven't really saved anything.
If they balk on the first offer, offer to split the difference for anything over the asking price if they provide a repair order.
That bike will be a TON OF FUN in the north Georgia mountains this year!!!
I pointed the owner at this thread- appreciate all the help. Hopefully we can make something happen :)
