Wondering if anyone can chime in on the quality of this piece:

And possibly ID it as well, I'm pretty sure this is a model designed and intended for the S4. If someone knows the stroke length and advise to the feasibility of using a universal type mount and running it up front/between the forks or on the side, "purse snatcher" style I'd appreciate that also.
I know very little about dampers but a quality one is def something I want for the M944SS, my steering geometry is going to be a bit bizarre between the heightened S&P rear hoop and the 30mm offset of the IMA triples. I know these were absurdly expensive when first introduced, but don't even know who Ducati contracted to build their dampers...
you need the longer stroke to run it lengthwise, you might be able to run it underneath though, near the horn area.
the part numbers for that kit would have been 979300237 (S4R), 96607100B (S4) and 96610802B (all other monsters from 02-04)
no idea on any of the other specs or if its rebuildable, but this is the company that made the damper

the mounts were made by the same company that made all the other DP stuff back then (DPM) and is good quality.
Lots of good info, 'tanks [thumbsup]
I may see if I can get it cheap and have in the garage with the rest of my hoard of parts for some future project unknown, or if it's nice enough mod my IMA triple to utilize it.
I can't remember if it was Stew or one of those guys that had the one that went under the bottom triple. On the stock piece there was a boss that had to be drilled and tapped for the kit that MotoWheels sold at one time. That was years ago though. I want to say it connected on one side of the triple underneath and the other end attached near the voltage regulator. I know that one was a short stroke damper and the only one I would have considered using. There's just something about the purse snatchers that puts me off, they're not for me.
Dis one

I could've sworn MW still sold that universal kit and that I was just looking at it recently but no dice...must've dreamed it. And of course now that's what I must have. What an excellent, clean solution that is.
I agree with you somewhat on the aesthetics of the "purse snatcher" style. Steering dampers just aren't one of those accessories that show well. Mounting them axial to the upper triple isn't all that great either imo.
I looked for one of this once. Tough find. I think it's a relatively common Ohlins damper but the fitting system for under the triple was special. MW did sell it but they are long sold out and no more are being made, at least that was the situation when I was trying to do this.
