Interesting.  Works on the same principle of the old carbon-arc movie projectors.  No wonder the projectors were ducted with their own exhaust and were responsible for more than a few theater fires!

Once upon a time I used to do service work on three arc furnaces that were used to melt magnesia, took about 8 hours to melt 20 tons of rocks. 40000 amps when running, it was like looking in to the heart of the sun, the  noise was something incredible too. ( they dropped a tub of molten rock once when removing it from the furnace, made a bit of a mess.)
