Topic title says it all, really.
Duck Stew just gave me a top triple off a Sport classic and I'm looking to have a spacer made so I can use it on my bike (with some machine work)
But... I need to know the tube diameter of the original. Anyone know before I go to the trouble of taking my top triple off?
thx.
Bump.
I went ahead and tried to measure it and it's about 23.5 mm. Except all the literature I can find says 25mm...
I'm guessing this thing tapers somewhat at the top, but now I'm wondering if I can just have a pinch collar made in 24mm and assume the new top triple (40mm clamp) can be torqued down enough to clamp the extra .5mm
Sound reasonable?

Nope.
The triple won't likely clamp down that far, and even if it did, it wouldn't clamp evenly, IE the 40mm hole wouldn't be round.
You need to measure the diameter of the steering tube to +/- .001", and give the top triple to your machinist so he can make the OD of the collar to fit.
Ideally, have your machinist measure the steering tube.
I do not think it's 23,5 mm
I have a few spacers to put under the toptripple and they are about 21.5 mm
Thanks guys
Looks like I finally get to add a micrometer to my tools collection...
Just to close the loop on this (not that anyone seems to care but me, but WTH ;D )
A SC triple 'hole' is 39.75mm in diameter (1.565 ')
2001 steering tube is 23.75 mm in diameter (.935 ')
Hopefully the machinist will know how much 'wiggle room' to add to the spacer to make everything work...
Went out and bought a micrometer. I love an excuse to buy new tools :)
We care, otherwise we would have let you twist slowly in the wind. ;D
