So I wake up this morning and find an icon on my computer to 'Get Windows 10'
I just got used to Windows 7.
Should I ignore it? I know Bill won't let me revert if I don't like it.
...same icon showed up here.
You click on it first and tell me what happens ;D

Life cereal: Mikey likes it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYEXzx-TINc#)
No wonder he grew up to work all alone under dark staircases and boiler rooms etc.
10? I thought we were only up to 8!
My computers still run 7! Lol!
The story has it that Bill tried to install Windows 8 and couldn't. He went to the people at Microsoft and told them to pull their collective heads out of their asses and fix it and offer the new OS for free to everyone. Now we have Windows 10.
I'm sure there are hardware issues with older systems that are running XP, but it's supposed to be backwards compatible to Vista.
I'm not clicking until I hear from someone that I won't have to throw this laptop away.

Nothing happens that fast with Microsoft...
I was born at night...
I was not born last night.
I aint clicking . . . I stay W7Pro64bit . . .
Sooo...
it turns out that MS installed a 'Get Windows 10' app.
If you click it allows you to reserve a free copy of 10 when it's released in July.
From what I can see it looks like 8.1 with the start menu added.
I'm in no hurry.
People with windows 7(sp1) and up can upgrade to Win 10 for free, no strings attached.

Win 7 and Win 8.1 don't play really nice together. My wife has 8.1 and I have 7 pro.
8.1 sucks...I like 7 fine, but the lack of cooperation between the two is frustrating.
We'll stick to 7 for the present. Let 'em iron out the bugs in 10 before I touch it.
I think we changed from Vista a few years ago [laugh]
Vista was an abomination.
Yep, sure was. We went back to XP from it within a month, then to 7 iirc.
I've got 8.1 and it seems to do ok for me. I use Photoshop, Office, internet and do some gaming. So far (about 6 months since I built this machine) everything seems really good. Only exception I have is that sometimes it goes into a sleep or hibernate mode and won't come back out. I just need to set it to not do that.
Vista was just weird. I got the same feeling from it as I did Windows ME. It was rushed to development and it showed badly.
JM
My new work computer has 8.1. I thought I was going to hate it, but it is OK. It is set up to run like 7 (i.e., with a mouse).
My main complaint is the PDF viewer sucks...but I just set it to default to the full Acrobat version that I have and it works fine.
I'm going to lock this until 10 is released and then open it back up on the off chance someone tries it.
I'm not really looking for input on 7 or 8.1.
Now that Win 10 is out, and I know some have tried it, let's hear...
good or bad.
T upgraded from 8.1 and her only comment is 10 doesn't like Chrome.
Youngerheuer couldn't resist the click.
His evaluation is that W10 is to W8... what W7 was to Vista.
Which I take as an endorsement..... if I was running W8 (which I [puke]) I'd be tempted too.
But I like my W7 too much, so I'll be going nowhere near W10 anytime soon.
I like 10 better for sure.

WAY better than 8. Better, but not massively, over 8.1. Basically it seems more like 7.
My home computer is 10 now, and had 8 and 8.1 previously. It's touch screen, but my 5 year old is the only one that uses it that way. I prefer the mouse.
My work computer is 8.1, and not touch screen. I like it fine as well.
I'm not a computer guy though...just a normal user.
I just bought a Dell laptop (touchscreen) with 10 last week. It's cool so far but haven't used it much yet. Also picked up a GoPro Hero 4 (silver) and having difficulty downloading QuickTime. The computer isn't going for it so sound quality on the GoPro videos is really bad.
Any clues?

Barely hear the sound at this point

I prefer 7, 8 works ok on my particular computer (custom build), but 10 will not install on my computer. C has 10, and it seems to work just fine on her laptop. Having the start menu back is a bonus, but once I started using 8, and explained some things to her about how 8 operated, she understood it a lot better and was using it just fine.

Control Panel > Uninstall a Program > View installed updates. Search for kb3035583, uninstall, reboot.
If you have auto-update configured, it will pull it again, though...

It's a hardware/driver issue pretty sure.

There are a few more relevant kb's if you really want to kill it: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/17/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-updates-in-windows-7-and-8/ (http://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/17/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-updates-in-windows-7-and-8/)
To DP's question, I've been using Win10 at work and am liking it so far. It feels like an updated and more polished Win7. As I use it for work, I'm not a fan of all the Home user stuff; xbox360, live content tiles, etc. and other pretty stuff that eats up RAM and CPU cycles. I also don't have a mic, so can't play with Cortana, which I hear is pretty decent. I haven't had any issues with performance or crashes. I could see driver issues if you have a bunch of periperals, and/or compatibility issues if you have a bunch of software, particularly older stuff, but that should get sorted as it matures. The business world rarely adopts a new OS until the first service pack comes out, partly for those reasons.
My wife's laptop has no software other than chrome AFAIK. She only got that one BSOD. Not sure if she updated drivers.

Agreed.
My old (as in over a decade) desktop finally shit the bed recently and I bought a cheap HP to replace it. I wanted nothing to do with Win8 after hearing too much ranting, so Win10 was the only way to go.
Not feeling it, could just as well have been XP. :P
I held out for a while, and put it on a spare PC at work. I have to say, I love it.
A lot of stuff got removed though -- if you have oddball apps, you should plan to manually reinstall them. And if you have a PC with "Office Starter" you should know W10 will try to hide it but it's still there.
Microsoft has annoyed the shit out of me over the years, but W10 is very nice. It runs much better than W7 for me. We have used w7pro in my office for a while now and will be finishing upgrading to W10 soon.

Used Windows 10 last week and was aggravated. [bang]
Mostly cause I couldn't find stuff but also because I was just trying to do something and 3 things needed to be updated first. [bang] [bang]
Those of you aggravated with W10 never had the "pleasure" of using W8. You would be crying in a corner after attempting to use that turd for less than 5 minutes.
Fortunately, Windows is not my problem anymore. (except when I have to help my father with his computer)
Have both work and home laptops running 10.
Getting used to it now!
Still prefer good ol 7!

Did you have to update drivers for the hardware?
My wife went from 8.1 to 10 and her touchpad barely works. I looked online and there are roughly 100 drivers that need updating to get the thing working right again.
I'm slower than I used to be. I'm still thinking 10 is useless. ;D
Free upgrade complete with drivers, all other upgrades and free security offered by ISP. All files unmolested as they were, etc. 7 was slowing down so I guess it"s all rigged to get you onto 10. A few clicks and it was all done in 10 minutes or so. I held off as long as I could but 7 was really starting to struggle so I caved to the free offer. ;D
Still have 8.1 on the workshop compact laptop (thanks GK). 10 is better.

What about the Touch Pad and the 100 drivers? or did you just throw it away?
a neighbor did the upgrade . . . she runs a business' accounting from home and has a "SoHo" style network and all printers were un-available and the MFC(wifi) was unreacheable; had to back up her C drive and format to re-install W7Pro64 . . . issue with printers taken care.
W10 would not allow to name printers and every re-start(shutdown-start), the printers would have a different name and MFC would not connect to network . . . That is one annoying issue I need to study deeper since it is annoying and it has a solution, at the time, not shutting down computer

My best advice (other than to switch to apple) is if you find that you must upgrade at some point to windows 10, just buy a new machine from Dell. If it doesnt work then send it back. My experience with Dell is that they get the hardware & software to run right, most of the time.
That eliminates hours and hours of screwing around when you could be installing new security lights or something.

Windows 7 was / is good (I use it at work.) 8, not so much (forced on me when I had to get a new computer.) It wanted you to have the touch screen experience, even if you didn't have a touch screen. It also felt like Microsoft was experimenting with their own version apple's knowing better than the end user what they wanted / should have access to...
Windows 10 gave me back almost everything that I like about 7. The blocky, touch screen UI is still there, but it allows itself to be sidelined, if that is your choice.
To date, the only thing I am not completely happy about in 10 is start menu....and even that has not been bad enough for me to research into a possible work around.

Go to the ASUS site for the drivers. When I looked into it there were roughly 100 drivers that needed updating from 8.1 to 10 depending on laptop configuration.
