happened the other day not to far from where I crashed in the canyon.
rider was airlifted out but is in pretty good condition.
question is...what kind of bike was it?
One of the big KTMs, 950 or 990 or the like.

What is that frame-like looking piece at the front of the engine? My first thought was that it was an old RC51 since the exhaust appears to mimic that of the low mounts.

I think they are all steel trellis frames. This bike would have been aluminum framed.
I think the flat at the front of the engine is a piece of fairing that miraculously survived.
Soon to be seen on craigslist as a salvage bike with "minor frame damage."
Good catch, DD.
The steel frame woulda survived.
Hot Tuna.
I think the flattish piece just in front of the alternator cover is the oil tank.
And from the fragment of the swingarm left on the axle, and the 5-bolt sprocket carrier.

Judging by the oil tank on the left side of the engine I'm thinking Aprilia RSV Mille or Tuono. There are single and dual exhaust models out there, but the engine and a few other queues look right.
I think Cloner and Speeddog are right.

*edited because I just realized Speeddog was using an obscure colloquialism to identify said model of motorcycle.
