[evil] They were getting after it. MM laid down the best time.
Never one to accept second without a fight, Marquez tried valiantly through the final left-hand swoop, opting for a wide entry in the hope to power past Baker on the inside. Despite coming together, Baker consummately held his nerve to cross the line 0.1s in front.

MM was wrestling that bike all over the track, and Baker looked smooth as butter. Good shit. [evil]

The two Americans, Baker and Mees, are flattrack pros who are able to ride the rear brake around the entire track, controlling wheel spin even on corner exit. Marquez is completely off of the brakes by mid corner, riding solely on determination, throttle control, and body english. Fun to watch, just wish it was a "best of 3" moto format to extend the action.
Random fun fact: Marquez is one day older than Brad Baker.

Flat track dirt racing is some of the best racing you'll ever see, I promise. [evil]

Guys who are good at it like MM, can do 'this' on the track with those skills.

I don't have the attention span for Paris/Dakar. I'd much rather watch short dirt oval races. You should check out Speedway.
Too old for what?
Searching Google? :P
Oh, and for the record it's called 'Dakar' these days. ;)

Even though its run in South America ;D A rose by any other name....
OK, I'll stop being so grumpy....but how is racing a MC on a dirt oval any different than Nascar?
Now, a demolition derby...that's "dirt track racing" I'd enjoy and pay to see! [thumbsup]

Comparing it to Nascar is pretty accurate if instead of a paved oval they would be driving on ice.
Actually OT isn't that far off because he remembers what NASCAR was. [He's old too]
When NASCAR started they raced on dirt ovals and Daytona was held on the beach. It was pretty much run what you brung. The thing that turns me off about most forms of racing is the surrounding media/fan circus, and stifling regulations that are implemented in the name of either cost saving or leveling the field.
It didn't used to be like that. There was real innovation, and the best innovators often won...you know...racing.
Motogp is on the same path I'm afraid with their spec this, and spec that. If the big boys (Honda) have an advantage because of budget then put spending caps in place. Let the suppliers figure out how to innovate on a budget, but don't pass stupid rules that make all the bikes similar to create a fake show.
Feel free to disagree...except OT...you're still old. :-*
It's all about money. None of it phases me, they're still racing and that's all that matters to me. I'm old too, and have been going to and or watching all forms of racing since before I was 10. ;)

Huh, what? Just woke up from my afternoon nap..... ;)
What makes you-all think I'm old? I was born long after Nascar moved to paved tracks.
DP, we "old guys" (I'm probably younger than you) need to find new sports where there are fewer rules.....but I can't think of any - off the top of my (balding) head.
Maybe we need an "Old Guy" discussion board..... [coffee]

There's something magical watching those flat track bikes fly on a mile track.

Yes there is. Springfield is awesome. There's a few half mile tracks that rock as well. Hagerstown Md used to be a great track to watch them.

That'll be the case at COTA this year.
Any mention of the Indy Mile makes me think of Kenny Roberts and this short clip of his reunion with the TZ... If you're an aging fan of motorcycles and you have not seen this before, Kenny might end up being your new hero for the day.

Seeing the way Keener and Springsteen pulled him up on to the podium says a lot about the spirit of flat track that I believe continues to this day. These guys must have the utmost trust and understanding of one another to pitch it into a corner (in excess of 130mph) while "touching". Only real difference between the racing then and now is probably the fact that Kenny got to actually kiss the trophy girl. And were else can these different manufactures (Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, Ducati, KTM, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Triumph and others) get into a pissing contest that isn't gonna overshadowed by how much is being invested into the electronics package... [thumbsup]
